It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas!!! As we approach the advent season, let us remember that just as Jesus came to be a light in the darkness, we too are to be a light.

Advent comes from the Latin word adventus, which means “coming” or “arrival”. Advent is the season of anticipating and celebrating the coming of the greatest gift of all, the Light of Christ, the birth of our Savior - born to bring light to a dark world , born to give hope, peace, healing, and joy, born to demonstrate unfailing love and faithfulness so that we too can be a light, so that through Him, we can be givers of hope, peace, healing, and joy.

At the Dunham School, it is our desire to be a light in our community. In fact, over forty years ago several families came together, and with much prayer and great sacrifice built a school for our community. Little did they know that one day, it would be called "The Dunham School" which literally means "home on the hill". The name Dunham is composed of two old English elements: dun, which means hill; and ham which is a word for home, thus the translation for the name Dunham is home on the hill. Not only has the vision of these founding families come to pass, but it is proclaimed by the very name of our school - a school that is to be a beacon of hope, a peaceful assurance, a harbor of safety from the raging storms of life. Our Dunham community continues to be a lighthouse that will draw men to Christ proclaiming His unending love and faithfulness. Please continue to lift up the Prima and Gomez families both now and in the coming days. As our Dunham community walks through this terrible time of loss and grief, we are reminded by Psalm 34:18 that “The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit.” As we draw near to the Lord, this grieving family, and each other, let us do so in hope and confidence that God will walk with us through it all.

The Dunham community mourns the loss of our senior classmate, Mason Prima. Please join us in prayers and support for Mason's parents, siblings, relatives and friends as they walk through this difficult time. Our counseling staff will be available to meet with students as they navigate the days ahead. Student magnets are here!! Pray Dunham is excited to continue the wonderful tradition of covering our students and their families with prayer by distributing magnets labeled with the students' names. At the start of the new semester, let’s pray for our students, faculty, staff, and administration.

As I go about my day, I find myself praying like this, “Lord, wherever they are, whatever they are facing, help them to exercise self-control. May they have courage to stand up for what is right. May they know the help that comes from your Holy Spirit. Help them to see the opportunities you place in front of them to do good. May they overcome evil through your power. And above all, may they love you and love others today.” As I pray, the verses run through my mind, and the S.C.H.O.O.L. letters become my prompt, even when I don’t have access to my Bible.

Whether you have school-aged children or grandchildren or you just know kids who are in school, let’s join together in praying that our communities of children would have Self-control, Courage, Help from God, Opportunities to do good, be Overcomers, and above all Love God and others. (A. Rhodes)

As we close out summer and welcome fall, let's pray Isaiah 43:19 over our students. “Forget about what’s happened; don’t keep going over old history. Be alert, be present. I’m about to do something brand-new. It’s bursting out! I will make a road through the wilderness of the world for my people to go home, and create rivers for them in the desert!" Isaiah 43:19

The world is a confusing place for our children. They are confronted with so much more than we were. From peer pressure, to cultural trends that defy the Word, to the comparison found on social media, to easily available drugs and promiscuity, there is a pressure to grow up quickly and to fit in; HOWEVER, notice the Lord says that He will make a road and create a river. God promises to provide a path home (to His truth and His plan), and He will refreshen, sustain, and nourish them along the way.

What area of refreshment does your child need on his path home? Is it hope instead of despair? Joy where there is depression? A Godly friend for the one that is lonely? Is it understanding in a tough class at school? Is it a financial need? Peace in the midst of turmoil? Whatever the wilderness or desert area is, let’s agree with Isaiah 43:19 and see the hand of the Lord move on behalf of our families.

Father,
Thank you for ordering the steps of our children. Thank you that before they were even created you had a plan for them, a plan that we could expect good and one that we could have hope for their future. Father, today we choose to put the past behind us and look with joyful expectancy to see you move in the lives of our children. Thank you for making a path in the wilderness. Show our children the right path to take and give them the boldness to stay on course. Thank you that in a lost and dark world, you provide refreshing water through Your word, godly relationships, mentors, and even through their dreams. Father, thank you for going before our families and making a way where there seems to be no way. We put our hope and trust in your Word and in your unfailing love. In Jesus name, Amen!

”A man who has a praying mother has a most cherished possession." Billy Graham

Throughout time, many of the greatest history makers had a praying parent. Billy Graham once said, ”A man who has a praying mother has a most cherished possession.” One of the greatest examples of praying parents, yet often overlooked, is Amram and Jochebed. While you may not recognize the names, you will recognize their son - Moses. In a time when Hebrew male babies were being killed, you could envision Moses’ parents desperately praying over Moses, pleading with God for His protection and for His guidance as Jochebed put the basket in the crocodile filled Nile River. What faith it took, for her to finally release the basket into the current of the river, into the hand of our Almighty God. As it is said, the rest is history. Through Moses the entire Hebrew nation was delivered out of bo***ge, and it started with an act of faith and prayer.

Like Moses, Billy Graham has led millions to freedom through Jesus Christ. He said that of all the people he had ever known, his mother had the greatest influence on his life. She would gather the family to spend time in the Word and in prayer. She along with his dad would pray for Billy Graham each morning at 10:00 - yet another example of praying parents that influenced and marked a child’s life for greatness.

Our society is in desperate need of more God filled history makers that will stand strong in the face of opposition, make the name of our Lord and Savior famous, bring freedom and hope to the oppressed and weary. Pray Dunham exists to do just this. We gather parents, grandparents, leaders of our school, and alumni to agree in prayer for our Dunham community, for those making decisions regarding our student’s education and future, and for those shaping the hearts and minds of our children.

Jesus, I pray that the faculty, staff, and students at The Dunham School will have peace in you. John 16:33a

And everything I’ve taught you is so that the peace which is in me will be in you and will give you great confidence as you rest in me. For in this unbelieving world you will experience trouble and sorrows, but you must be courageous, for I have conquered the world!” John 16:33

Please stand in agreement with us for the “Beauty and the Beast”performance this weekend-praying everyone having to do with the play and everybody in the play stays completely healthy and that they have endurance this weekend, that everything comes together beautifully, that both performances go off without a hitch this weekend, all would have so much fun, and that all glory for this production is given to God!! Encouragement for today!!! When you've fought, when you've prayed, when you've done everything you knew to do, and yet the battle still surrounds you. When you think you can't go on and all you can see is the trial at hand, don't give up hope! Continue to stand your ground! The Bible gives us clear instructions "...after you have done everything, stand," Ephesians 3:16

Standing isn't a passive stance. In the Greek it means to stand firm and immovable, to establish, to be of steadfast mind, and to escape into safety. In simple terms, to stand is a vertical position. Picture a line connecting your heart to your head to Heaven. It is an alignment with God's truth. It is staying in unity with God, a place where God bestows His blessings (Psalm 133).

To stand, is to keep meditating on God's promises, keeping our eyes on Him and His truth, not letting our circumstances cause us to waver from what the Lord has said. It is keeping our mind steadfast on Him, bringing peace to the storm (Isaiah 26:3). When Peter stepped out of the boat in Matthew 14:28-31 to walk to Jesus, he was safe, as long as he kept his eyes on Jesus, but when he looked at the waves and the storm, he began to sink. He had taken his eyes off of Jesus.

Meditate on God's promises. Keep your eyes on Him. Remind yourself of what God has already done for you. Even though the battle may have being going on for a while, God's word remains true. He hasn't forgotten you. He is with you, fighting for you.

You are not alone. We want to stand with you through prayer and encouragement. Pray Dunham will meet on Friday, March 11th from 8:00 a.m. - 9:00 a.m. in the Brown Holt Chapel Arts Center. The Bible says that the prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective; and yet something extraordinary also happens when two or more agree together in prayer. (James 5:16, Matthew 18:19)

The power of prayer has been seen throughout history.
-Giants were slain
-Mouths of lions were shut, and Daniel’s God wins
-Esther gained great favor and a nation of people were saved
-A child came to life
-The lame were healed, the blind gained sight, and the deaf could hear

Through the power of prayer, forty years ago the Dunham School was founded, impacting the hearts and minds of families in the Baton Rouge community. Prayers matter!

Recently we asked students what it means to know parents were praying for them. Some of the responses were:
“I have a sense of peace and hope.”
“I feel loved.”
“This gives me strength”
“It helps me know that I am not alone.”

The one statement that stood out was “Your prayers are love. They are my strength.” Parents, grandparents, alumni, aunts, uncles, siblings, friends...your prayers matter!
