Thank you St. John's United Methodist Church in Baton Rouge for having me the "Dog Days of Summer" lecture on dog ownership. It was fun, aside from the projector issues. But yes, great fun, looking forward to doing this again.

When interacting with dogs, you might have thought that the canines seem to respond to your emotions. Now, a new study has uncovered evidence to support what many dog lovers and scientists have understood for years: Dogs have the ability to distinguish between human emotions. Past research had shown that dogs can recognize human emotions, but these studies usually tested two human facial expressions—one positive and one negative—at a time. It was therefore unclear whether dogs only perceive a difference between a “happy” mood and a “bad” mood or whether they can distinguish between emotions within one of these categories.

How did researchers use MRI scans to fill this knowledge gap? https://bit.ly/4gsGtEz

Having a disability does not automatically make your dog a service dog.

This is an important distinction that gets misunderstood all the time.

Someone can have a disability, mental health condition, emotional disorder, or multiple disabilities and genuinely benefit from having a service dog. But the person's diagnosis alone does not determine whether their dog is a service dog.

What makes the dog a service dog is the work or tasks the dog is individually trained to perform to directly mitigate the person's disability.

For example, a dog may be trained to:

• Alert to a medical condition
• Interrupt or redirect harmful behaviors
• Retrieve medication or needed items
• Provide trained assistance during a medical episode
• Perform mobility-related assistance
• Guide a person with a visual impairment
• Perform trained psychiatric tasks such as interrupting episodes, waking from nightmares, or guiding their handler to a safe location

Simply feeling better because your dog is present is not the same thing as a trained service task.

Your dog can provide comfort, companionship, emotional support, and an incredible bond—and that can be extremely valuable. But those things alone don't turn a pet into a service dog.

Disability may explain WHY someone needs a service dog.
The dog's trained work explains WHAT makes that dog a service dog.

Understanding this distinction helps protect legitimate service dog teams while also respecting people who use their dogs for other forms of support.

Education matters. Know the difference.
