Dr. Derek Thompson was awarded the 2026 New Scientist Award in Applied Climatology by the American Association of State Climatologists (AASC). This is a prestigious award, and Derek was selected because his recent paper, "A Climatology of Gridded Wet-Bulb Globe Temperature for the Southeastern United States," published in the Journal of Applied Meteorology and Climatology, was rated as "an excellent example of high-quality applied climatological research" by the AASC Awards Committee.

As the winner, Derek will attend the AASC Annual Meeting in Fairbanks, Alaska, this June. At the meeting, Derek will present his research to a large crowd of state climatologists, state climate officials, and numerous other researchers, climatologists, and meteorologists.
