Statement of Condolence from the Southern University System

On behalf of the Southern University System, we extend our deepest and most heartfelt condolences to the families, loved ones, and the entire Shreveport community following the unimaginable tragedy that claimed the lives of eight innocent children yesterday.

There are simply no words that can adequately express the sorrow felt in moments like this.

Our hearts are especially heavy for the families enduring this devastating loss, as well as for those who were injured and continue to recover.

As an institution rooted in community, compassion, and the upliftment of future generations, we stand in solidarity with the Shreveport community during this time of grief and mourning. And, we join leaders across the state in lifting prayers for healing and strength.

Southern University and A&M College mourns the passing of former head football coach and alumnus Gerald Kimble, who died Tuesday, March 31 at the age of 84.

Kimble leaves behind a legacy as both a student-athlete and coach whose impact extended across generations of Southern University students, student-athletes, and alumni.

“Coach Kimble was a true Jaguar — on the field, on the sidelines, and in the community,” said John K. Pierre, chancellor of Southern University and A&M College. “His legacy is one of excellence, resilience and service. He inspired generations to believe in themselves and to strive for greatness.”
