So Friday morning I had a long planned fishing trip with buddy Mark Ippolito. He wanted to share with me his honey hole over in the vicinity of Georgetown, CO where he assured me the opportunity to catch some CO Native Greenback Cutthroat trout! I was all in to join him! The trip over there was about two hours and took me over Guanella Pass which is just gorgeous! I saw a few huge Mule Deer and several Big Horn Sheep but the scenery was really special. On the other side of this pass lies the small community of Georgetown was founded in 1859 during the CO Gold Rush and known as “The Silver Queen of the Rockies”. With only 1,250 residents it’s a neat little mountain town.
Anyway, back to the fishing… we drove about 30 minutes out of town along Interstate 70 West. He had a specific pull off point (still a secret) to access the little freestone stream known as Clear Creek which is not much wider than 20’, crystal clear and only 12”-20” at the deepest point. 99% of the time I would turn my nose up and not even think about fishing a little shallow creek like that! These small trout seem to thrive in there and at best rarely exceed a foot long! Aggressive at feeding and so fun to catch. Mark knew what to expect and how best to approach and landed 19 then worked his ass off trying to catch that elusive #20 to no avail. Meanwhile I netted 7 and was quite satisfied knowing next time my count will surely be higher. My 4 wt. bamboo fly rod was perfect.
Those tiny fish are so beautiful and being only one of the two CO native species of trout it was a treat for me to catch a few! The Colorado River Cutthroat is the only other Native species to this State. Clear Creek runs for roughly 50 miles from the Loveland Pass area eastward with much of it running right along Interstate 70. Hope you enjoy the pics.

So our ranching neighbors up north of us a few miles had a few escapees from their Angus herd come by our place the other day. Rock Ranch Wranglers Erin Gottenborg Michalski are just wonderful neighbors and when I called them to let them know they rounded up the troops and started gathering them up. Fortunately the four-legged steaks were heading in the right direction back to their home range. The wee one on the far left (Harper) on horseback is quite the equestrian! She’s always participating in riding, roping events and loves horses!

Sometimes even our smallest and most delicate critters need a bit of help, especially since in this case we caused the issue. Evidently one of our guests lost a fly during a back cast with a fly rod. A bit of the tippet along with the fly ended up hanging in the tree and this Stellar Jay saw the fly and took it as a meal. I heard the noise from the poor bird having upside down in the tree with the fly stuck in their beak… how long this poor bird dealt with the problem I have no idea but we rescued him as quickly as we could with tall ladder and scissors in hand, I dispatched Liz to go up the ladder while I held it. She was able to grab the bird and cut the line then unraveling it off the bird then finally dislodging the hook of the fly off the bird beak. Holding it momentarily until the bird got oriented she then opened her hands and “off” it went.

Here’s our “wild child” after a busy day of running the river and chasing chipmunks, squirrels during the documentary filming in the river a couple of days ago. He’s impossible to bathe & groom so I generally just do the best I can!!
