During Research & Scholarship Day in April, Occupational Therapy students Amelia Morrison, Hailee McCoy and Haylee Salter shared their research project, Parent-Perceived Barriers and Facilitators to Accessing Public Libraries for Children with Sensory Processing Differences.

Their study asked parents and caregivers nine open-ended questions to help the Brewer Public Library identify key considerations as it develops a Sensory Processing Room, with the goal of creating a more accessible and inclusive space for all visitors. Looking ahead, the students hope to expand their research to include a larger group of participants and help inform efforts to make more public spaces accessible to all.

In observance of Juneteenth, Husson University will be closed today, June 19. This holiday commemorates the day when enslaved people in Galveston, Texas, learned of their freedom in 1865, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued.

As we reflect on the significance of today, we honor those who fought for freedom and acknowledge the ongoing pursuit of equality.

Dr. Lauren Fysh, an assistant professor in the Husson University School of Occupational Therapy, is the recipient of this year’s Distinguished University Service Award.

This award is presented to a faculty member who demonstrates outstanding service to both Husson University and the broader community. At Husson, Dr. Fysh develops and facilitates a pro bono program in which students complete evaluations for local school districts and implement Tier 1 and Tier 2 response-to-intervention programming, serving approximately 85 children annually.

Dr. Fysh is also Co-Chair of the Maine Occupational Therapy Association’s Children and Youth SIS, where she collaborates with the Maine Department of Education, engages in advocacy efforts and contributes to the development of educational materials and programming. She also provides Husson students with opportunities to participate in this work through conference presentations and resource development.

Additionally, as faculty advisor for Husson’s Student Occupational Therapy
Association, Dr. Fysh mentors students as they coordinate inclusive community programs, including Hall-OT-ween, Sleigh the Holidays and adaptive dance.
Congratulations, Dr. Fysh, on this well-deserved recognition!

Baldwin's Bites is set up today at the Whoopie Pie Festival. We have been teasing some new flavors and today is the day we let you know what they are. Of course we will have our award winning Smores Whoopie Pie again. First up we have the Butterdoodle. The cakes are Snickerdoodle flavor but we first dredge them in butter and roll them in cinnamon and sugar. Then we put a lightly flavored cinnamon Whoopie pie filling in the middle of them. Then we will have our twist on a Maine staple the Needham. Two chocolate cakes with Needham filling in between and then half dunked in our signature ganache. We look forward to seeing all of you today!!! Stop on by and vote for Husson!!!!!
