In February 2019, members of the Peace and Justice Club participated in the Lemkin Summit to End Genocide and Mass Atrocities where we learned about the widespread violation of Sudanese civilians’ human rights during president Omar al-Bashir’s kleptocratic 29 years of governance. Just days before , al-Bashir declared a year-long state of emergency in response to the peaceful demonstrations led by Sudanese civilians protesting rises in the cost of bread and calling on al-Bashir to step down. Though al-Bashir stepped down in March and was arrested in April (now under indictment by the International Criminal Court for genocide, war crimes, and crimes against humanity), his legacy of corruption and violence has persisted as the very military commanders that carried out his removal from office — like Gen. Abdel-Fattah Burhan of the Transitional Military Council — have remained in power, despite expectations for the Sudanese government to transition to democratic civilian rule.

On June 3, the military launched a violent crackdown on peaceful protestors’ campaign in Khartoum, with government-supported paramilitary forces known as the Rapid Support Forces (RSF, or Janjaweed) killing over 100 people (including children). Over 70 cases of r**e have been reported. An internet shutdown has since rendered communication with the rest of the world extremely difficult for Sudanese civilians and leaders of the Alliance of Freedom and Change.

As of June 12, the Alliance for Freedom and Change suspended its civil disobedience campaign. According to Ethiopian mediator Mahmoud Drir, Alliance for Freedom and Change and TMC leaders have agreed to resume talks regarding transitional leadership.

At Lemkin, we also learned how to begin addressing the nexus of conflict and corruption contributing to global atrocities, like what’s happening in right now. If have information (and act), you are powerful. Please inform yourself about what has been going on in Sudan since kleptocrat al-Bashir’s deposition. 🕊LINK IN BIO FOR RESOURCES ON HOW TO DEMONSTRATE SOLIDARITY WITH 🕊

Thanks to all who came to tonight’s meeting, ‘Lobbying 101’! The P&J team hopes you learned as much as we did about the potentiality and practicality of grassroots advocacy. DM us if you’d like to learn more about what was discussed, and be sure to stop by our table outside of Boulder next week to continue these action-oriented conversations. @ Loyola University Maryland

Join us this Wednesday 3/13 at 6pm in the CIE for “Lobbying 101” — discuss strategies for harnessing our power as constituents/holding our elected officials (or other authorities) accountable for appropriately addressing issues that deeply matter to us. 👏🏼 🗳 ✏️🏛 // this meeting will be in part informed by what we’ve learned at the Lemkin Summit to End Genocide and Mass Atrocities (in which we lobbied on Capitol Hill), but we’ll allocate time to discussing how to be advocates in our local and Loyola communities. See you then!
