Listening to shame 03/09/2023

Do you know what shame feels like within your body? I know shame intimately. For the first 8-years of my academic career as a child (1st-8th grade) I felt ashamed of my performance. In turn I have been able to turn my shame into motivation to achieve, however, I have not been able to outrun my inherent feelings of inferiority that have been based in shame. What would your life look like if you were to turn and face shame with curiosity and empathy?

Listening to shame Shame is an unspoken epidemic, the secret behind many forms of broken behavior. Brené Brown, whose earlier talk on vulnerability became a viral hit, explores what can happen when people confront their shame head-on. Her own humor, humanity and vulnerability shine through every word.

A 16-year-old boy was shot and killed in the park 1000 feet from my house on Monday. This is my reflection.

No one is "safe" unless the least of us are "safe". Some of us run to the suburbs or the woods or the "safe part of the city" to get away from "those people".

But here's the thing, the more we attempt to "leave behind" those who we have "left behind", only more chaos and pain will ensue. Inevitably the very worlds we wish to create distance from, engulf us.

Instead, if we learn to "go back and help" those we wish to abandon we will all grow more free from violence and danger.

I may live alongside "the poor", "the drug dealers", "the unemployed", "the crippled", but I have yet to practice "loving them like myself". I look forward to modeling Christ's relationship with the "undesirables" in my own life.

For, who else can help the poor if not those who are not poor? Who else can feed the hungry if not those who are not hungry?
Who else can help the wounded if not those who are less wounded?

If I want change, I must will it to be in my heart, my house, my street, my neighborhood, my district and my state (in that order).

I look forward to sharing my journey towards being a good samaritan with you.

I read somewhere that “Happiness comes from working daily towards your goals.” This resonates with me because often, I’m taking teensy tiny steps towards achieving goals for the future. But I had never really recognized how much joy I experienced by checking something off my to-do list that’s important to “future-Jasmine”.

Why is it that happiness is tied to goal-achieving? Why isn’t that the feeling associated with happiness (contentment, satisfaction, peace) linked to going out to eat? Or going shopping? Or binge watching vines?

Maybe it’s because when we put our true interests, desires and needs first, by incrementally working to fulfill them, we are privately making a commitment to live a deeply personal and individual life that reflects what we really care about.

Happy Monday!

For all the days you aren’t motivated to act, rely on your habits to have your back!

Haha. Clearly been working at a daycare for too long

I worked my last day at Girl Scouts of Central Maryland yesterday.

It was bittersweet seeing that my boss who is battling cancer surprised me with flowers and gifts. She wasn't in all week due to nausea.

I will miss my team's energy and love.

However, I am ready for my next company and position.

Problem is, I only have enough clothes for 2 days ha ha.

You wouldn't believe the negative thoughts that I let bully my mind.

Some of these thoughts are:

"You look ugly with your glasses on."
"No one really likes you."
"You are going to end up poor." etc. etc.

I'll save you from the sob story, ha ha.

Why am I telling you this? Because many of you know me as someone who is always positive and sunshine-y, however, I fight my own inner battles too.

Each day I am growing more and more conscious of my negative inner dialogue and I FIGHT to change my mind pattern to support me rather than to undermine me.

Every thought is powerful.

One of my biggest fears is that I will be an unmarried woman for the rest of my life. Sounds tragic, right?

Well I'm using Jim Carrey's visualization technique to change my relational future.

What fears do you have? What are you doing to dis-empower them?
