👨🏽🎨 Please enjoy this assortment of Pre-k and Kindergarten projects relating to amazing Black artists. Mrs. Kornberg read Firebird, talked about American Ballet dancer Misty Copeland, and she even taught the children a few ballet moves like 1st and 2nd position! (I wish I had those pics for you 😘) Mrs. Mussman read Change Sings by poet and activist Amanda Gorman. The students created their own guitars and decided how they could change the world! In art, they studied Jessi Raulet and Alma Thomas who each created colorful and bright masterpieces. It’s interesting to note that Alma Thomas was a teacher in DC for 35 years and became an artist in her 70s, so Mrs. Brown assures us that we all have time to discover our passions and talents! 🎨 Kindergarten is spending the week talking about Rosa Parks and George Washington Carver and in art class they studied Jean-Michel Basquiat. Their work is hanging in the hallway leading to the stairwell by Kindergarten if you’d like to get a closer look! 👩🏾🎨

🏮🐲 Happy Lunar New Year - The year of the dragon! 🐉🏮 The Twos created adorable dragons out of cupcake wrappers, the aftercare students “cooked noodles” in their dramatic play center, and the Cultures and Cuisines class (Full day Pre-K) actually cooked longevity noodles and enjoyed them too! The C &C students read “Chinese New Year’s Dragon” and made lanterns that we will share soon! Mrs. McClain reports that the Lunar New Year celebrations last about two weeks and culminate in a Lantern Festival, so stay tuned for those pics! 🏮

Last week was jam PACKED for our Kindergarten students. They learned about NASA mathematician Katherine Johnson and completed a STEM project where they designed and tested a space capsule. It was also P week, so they spent Friday in PAJAMAS, POPPING & eating POPCORN, and cooking & enjoying PANCAKES! We hope you enjoy this PEEK into their wonderful week! Thank you Mrs. Athey for all the PICTURES 😜 *These pics don’t even show you the Kindergarteners practicing reading and writing CVC words and sentences, counting by 10s, completing a directed drawing of a penguin, and working with a classmate on a Valentines STEM challenge… among other things! Our K days are packed and filled with learning through play! We are so PROUD of these big kids on campus!

💜💛💚A huge thank you to Tiffaney for coming to share about Mardi Gras with the Pre-K students today! They heard a story about her beloved New Orleans and got to enjoy a King Cake, which she had sent right from Nola! Tradition says that the person who finds the baby in the cake will have a lucky and prosperous year. They are considered the “king” or “queen” for the year. Each child eagerly ate their cake looking for the baby… guess who got the very last piece and found the baby inside?! Mom Mom! We already knew she was the queen of Grace, so it is only fitting 🥰👑👸

Lunch bunch is available on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 12-2:30. If you are interested, make sure to sign up on the signup genius from Tami’s “From the Director’s Desk newsletter! This week Miss Jo reports that during Mindfulness Monday, the children continued practicing fun animal poses, listened to the singing bowl, and examined crystals! For Whisk It Up Wednesday, they made snowflakes out of pretzels and marshmallows. Of course they get to enjoy their creation after making it! The students are asked to try the food and then give a thumbs up or down to share if they like it or not! What a good way to get kids to try new foods! And finally, Fantastic Friday involves fun and games! This week the children played hot potato, musical chairs, a mitten matching game, and they had a dance party! We are lucky to have this fun option for students to stay at school until 2:30!

It has been a 🐻 BEARY 🐻❄️ exciting month in the 3s classes! Both home rooms have focused on bears and learned about hibernation this month! They all created bear art and played bear themed games! The 3s teachers are amazingly creative at incorporating a theme into their daily play. The magnatiles and Lincoln logs became dens for little bear friends, and the counting practice involved bear counters this month! We are so lucky to have amazing teachers who make learning fun and make play purposeful!

Kindergarten completed their Martin Luther King Jr. Day service project today. They made 120 sandwiches that were delivered to Paul’s Place already! Last week in preparation, the class read Maddie’s Fridge by Lois Brandt and Vin Vogul. After reading this story, they discussed how many people in Baltimore have plenty of food at home while others have little to no food at home. They discussed how to help the people who are hungry in Baltimore and one way that Mrs. Athey told them they can help is by making sandwiches for the people who visit Paul’s Place. Their goal was to make 100 sandwiches and they surpassed their goal by 20 today! They worked hard to make tasty sandwiches that will nourish some of our Baltimore neighbors! Thank you to all the Kindergarten parents for your generous donations, and extra thanks to Williams‘s mom, who delivered the boxes of tasty sandwiches today! We are so proud of these young leaders! We hope you will take the lessons you have learned and continue to shine your light in our community and world!
