From Brazil to Baltimore and beyond, the rhythm continues.

We had the honor of learning the art of making caxixis from Prof. Camaleã (ES) and Mestre Gato Preto (Guyane Française) during our time studying in Brazil. What was shared with us, we now pass forward.

These moments capture students from our NAF afterschool program alongside Baltimore City Public Schools youth, all learning not just how to make an instrument—but how to carry culture, history, and rhythm in their hands.

From Baltimore, MD to Floyd, VA and Ft. Myers, FL, this knowledge continues to travel, connect, and grow.

This summer Instrutor Siriguejo spent two incredible weeks in Medellín, Colombia, where he shared his passion for capoeira through a series of classes and cultural workshops hosted by Oficina da Capoeira Medellín.

Siri led artistic workshops in recycled handmade caxixis and papier-mâché cabaças, welcoming participants from ages 8 to 40 into the creative and musical side of capoeira. His hands-on sessions bridged generations and brought together youth and adults in celebration of Afro-Brazilian culture.

He also taught capoeira classes focused on Benguela and São Bento Grande sequences, supporting multiple chapters of Oficina da Capoeira throughout Medellín. It was a heartwarming experience reconnecting with capoeiristas he hadn’t seen in over a decade—including some he had previously taught during workshops in Belo Horizonte, MG, Brazil.

A huge thank you to Corporación Mangle, Centro de Desarrollo Cultural de Moravia, and the entire ODC Medellín family for making this exchange so rich and meaningful. Até já! ✨
