This study explores how scholars engaging in critical quantitative and computational methodologies (critQCM) navigate the racialized barriers embedded within quantitative research. Using a grounded theory approach and focus groups, we examine how racialized methodological trajectories restrict scholars’ agency and how critQCM offers transformative potential to reclaim quantitative methods for equity and justice. Findings reveal systemic gatekeeping, racialization of methodological choices, and the need for culturally responsive mentorship. Our study contributes to reimagining quantitative inquiry as a tool for decolonization and equity oriented futures in education research, resonating with calls to “unforget histories” and construct transformative pathways forward.

This systematic literature review of 30 articles (2017-2024) explored the intersection between Afrofuturism and science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) by examining how Afrofuturism’s core tenets—the reclamation of Black technological legacies, critique of racialized disparities, and envisioning of liberatory futures—align with the sociotechnical dimensions of STEM practice and education. Building on McGee and White’s (2021) conceptualization of Afrofuturism as a transformative pedagogical framework for Black learners, this study positions speculative design as a political act that disrupts dominant STEM logics while cultivating culturally grounded technological agency. Findings highlight the potential of Afrofuturist pedagogy to address structural inequities, promote inclusive teaching practices, and reimagine STEM education as a site of cultural and technological liberation.

Introducing… The Equity Ethics Spotlight!

These videos will highlight innovators from our 400 Years of Racism and Resistance Timeline (https://www.r-rights-400years.com/) who exhibit Equity Ethics in their work.

McGee and Bentley (2017) introduced the concept of “equity ethics” as a fundamental principle guiding behavior and action toward justice, especially racial justice, and rectifying racial inequities through one’s STEM abilities and innovations. In this series we will meet many such innovators from across 400 years who have shaped our lives and world in a variety of ways!

In this first spotlight, we get to know James Forten. Born in 1766, Forten was a pioneering businessman, inventor, and abolitionist who contributions to both industry and social justice left a lasting legacy. For more information on this Equity Ethics Practitioner, check him out on our website!

This just in: R-RIGHTS is in the news! Check out this new article from Lynn Bonner and Brandon Kingdollar published in

In the article, “NC’s next generation of scientists fear careers are going ‘up in smoke’ as NIH grants end,” you’ll hear from a variety of folx impacted by the federal DEI ban and subsequent grant terminations. As our founder, Dr. Ebony O. McGee, expressed, we will see the effects of these terminations in research careers.

Grants are vital to conduct research. The elimination of funds supporting marginalized communities in STEM sends a message about who is important and what experiences are worth researching. We must continue to push and resist. The work doesn’t stop here; we’re just getting started!
