Founded in 2006, we currently have two programs in Downtown Baltimore that provide excellent education and care for children 18 months – 6 years.

At The Baltimore Montessori, our mission is to ensure the total development of each child and we stay true to the concepts of traditional Montessori education as outlined by Dr. Maria Montessori. The school has a proven track record of children with high academic standards. We are the first private Montessori school in Baltimore City to be certified by both the Maryland State Department of Education and the Montessori Schools of Maryland.

There’s something quietly powerful about a Montessori rug.

To an adult, it might look like a simple woven mat rolled up in the corner of the classroom. But to a child, it represents freedom, boundaries, trust, and self-knowledge all woven into one small space.

When a child chooses a rug and unrolls it, they’re doing more than picking a spot on the floor. They’re making a decision: Where do I learn best? What space feels right for me today?
Tables often feel like fixed options, places we’ve all been told to sit, listen, and stay within expectations. The rug is different. The rug says:
“Your learning belongs to you. Trust yourself.”

It becomes a workspace the child created with their own hands, sized perfectly for their body and their work. It teaches natural boundaries; this is my space, that is yours; without needing a single spoken rule. It teaches care, rolling it neatly, respecting its edges, keeping materials within its borders. It teaches responsibility: I chose this spot, I prepared this space, and I honor it.

But most beautifully, the rug teaches a quiet kind of confidence.
The confidence to follow their instincts.
The confidence to choose how they learn.
The confidence to take up space in a way that feels safe and meaningful to them.

In Montessori, the rug isn’t just a mat.
It’s an invitation.
A declaration of independence.
A soft, woven reminder that even the smallest people deserve room to grow in ways that feel true to themselves.

And watching a child choose their rug, roll it out, settle in, and begin their work is one of the clearest signs that when we trust children, they rise beautifully into that trust.

The Secrets Behind the Pink Tower

At first glance, the Pink Tower might just look like a simple stacking toy made of ten pink cubes in graduated sizes. But in Montessori education, nothing is accidental, and this iconic material holds layers of purpose and hidden wisdom.

Purposeful Design:
Each cube increases by exactly 1 cm in every dimension, inviting children to refine their visual discrimination of size and develop the mathematical mind long before formal math lessons begin.

Building Concentration and Order:
As children carefully carry, compare, and stack the cubes from largest to smallest, they are developing focus, coordination, and a deep sense of order, which becomes the foundation for all higher learning.

Indirect Preparation for Math and Language:
What looks like play is actually preparation for abstract thinking, geometry, volume, base ten concepts, and even language, as children begin to describe what they see using words like “big,” “small,” “larger,” and “smaller.”

A Moment of Mastery:
When a child completes the tower independently—perfectly balanced and aligned—they experience an inner sense of satisfaction and confidence that no adult praise can replace.

The Pink Tower is not just about blocks. It is about building the architecture of the mind, one cube at a time.
