HISTORY OF UMOJA CHRISTIAN HOMESCHOOL SUPPORT GROUP

Umoja is a Swahili word which means “unity”. In the days and times we live in, we know that in order to raise godly and successful families, we need unity. In 2001, Dianne McGlen, Corliss Bailey and Kimberly McDaniel met, having the same desire and the same need-to find an environment more conducive to the educational, natural and spiritual development of their children that would help them to raise a godly and successful family. With prayer and planning, that need was met with the birthing of UMOJA Homeschool Support Group. From the onset, their prayer and hope was to create and maintain a Christ centered environment which promoted excellence in and for their children as well as support for their family and other families answering the call to homeschool.

Twenty-one years later, we continue to fulfill the original vision. Psalm 133:1 says: ‘Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity!’ UMOJA has become a wonderful extension of our families. It is an awesome opportunity to experience support, knitting of hearts and laboring together with one mindset.

As always, our work is a collaborative effort as each family contributes out of their abundance of giftedness. One of the great benefits of being in UMOJA is sharing—sharing knowledge, resources, ideas, teaching methods and encouragement. We thank God for UMOJA and all the opportunities it affords us and we pray its mission will live in our hearts.
