Advocacy, resources, and training for education communities serving neurodivergent learners!

08/09/2023

Hi Family,

After two years of serving, I’ve decided to close Umoja Collective. I wanted to take a moment to explain the reasons behind this difficult choice.

Umoja Collective has been dedicated to advocating for the rights and well-being of students with disabilities, their families, and the education community at large. It has been a privilege to work alongside incredibly passionate individuals who share a common goal of ensuring that every child receives the support and resources they deserve to thrive.

One of the significant factors that have influenced my decision is the persistent lack of sustainable funding for mission-driven work like ours. While we have tirelessly strived to make a positive impact on the lives of those we serve, the challenge of securing adequate financial resources has proven to be an ongoing hurdle. The complexities of navigating funding streams and grants, coupled with the unpredictability of the financial landscape, have ultimately made it increasingly difficult to sustain the level of commitment that Umoja Collective's mission and clients deserve.

After much reflection and consideration, I have come to realize that it is time for me to close this chapter of my professional journey.

I am truly grateful for the support of clients, colleagues, and partners who have believed in Umoja Collective’s mission and contributed to its success. The relationships we’ve formed and the impact we have collectively made will remain a source of pride for me.

While Umoja Collective will cease its operations, my commitment to advocating for those with disabilities remains unwavering. I will continue to seek opportunities to contribute to the special education community in new and meaningful ways.

I want to express my heartfelt gratitude to you for your collaboration and support throughout our journey together.

Onward & Upward! ✊🏾✊🏿✊🏻✊🏽✊🏼

Every child deserves the opportunity to learn and grow, regardless of their abilities. That's why special education is crucial in providing 7.2 million students in the US with the support and resources they need to achieve their goals. We want to give a big shoutout to all the educators and parents who work tirelessly to make education accessible and empowering for all students, especially those with disabilities. Your dedication and commitment are truly inspiring and are helping to create a more inclusive society where every child can thrive. πŸŒŸπŸ™

Neurodiversity describes the idea that people process, learn, and communicate with the world around them in many different ways; there is no one right way of thinking, learning, and behaving.. These unique cognitive processes bring strengths such as hyperfocus, innovation, and creativity to our society. However, not all education systems are designed to support the diverse needs of neurodiverse individuals. Let's work together to create an inclusive and equitable education system that provides special education to support the unique needs of all students.

During Deaf Awareness Week, let's remember that creating an inclusive education system for the deaf community is crucial. State and local education agencies should consider various factors when developing IEPs for children who are deaf, including communication needs, linguistic needs, and social-emotional needs. Let's work towards creating an education system that caters to the needs of every child.

"If a child can't learn the way we teach, maybe we should teach the way they learn"- Ignacio Estrada reminds us of the importance of individualized approaches to special education and disabilities. As we recognize the value of special education, let's also acknowledge and support the dedicated educators who make it possible.
