🎓✨ Exciting news from UMBC!
UMBC’s Department of Modern Languages, Linguistics & Intercultural Communication is now offering enrolled students the opportunity to earn language credits through the Maryland Seal of Biliteracy.
This is a powerful example of how the Seal of Biliteracy can open doors beyond high school, recognizing students’ multilingual skills as valuable academic assets.
MFLA celebrates UMBC for honoring language learning, multilingualism, and the many cultural and linguistic strengths students bring with them.
Students can check the UMBC Undergraduate Catalog in June 2026 for more information.

Join us for a conversation on masculinity, performance, and identity!
ID: A performer stands on a stage under blue lighting, wearing a large, flowing, translucent outfit with soft tones, reaching out toward the audience. The flyer also includes colored words layered over the image.
This virtual conversation features Peruvian performer Luciano Anahel, whose work across drag, ballroom, and experimental performance offers a lens to understand masculinity as something constructed, negotiated, and lived. Engaging masculinities from the Global South, this event explores how transmasculine performance challenges dominant norms while opening space for new ways of thinking about identity, embodiment, and belonging. Through artistic practice, participants are invited to reflect on how gender operates across social spaces and how performance becomes a strategy for navigating and reshaping those spaces.

Looking for an elective on Latin American Studies? “Masculinities in the Americas” is open
ID: Photograph by Fabian Guerrero of a shirtless ranchero holding a rooster with one hand and the other resting at his hip. The background is a desert scene, and in the foreground, fragmented, soft rose-and-ochre-toned squares suggest multiple masculinities.
This course examines the historical formation and cultural representation of masculinities in the Americas from interdisciplinary and comparative perspectives. Through literature, film, visual arts, and popular culture, students analyze how gender, race, sexuality, indigeneity, class, migration, and coloniality intersect in shaping masculinities and the systems of gatekeeping that sustain them. The course explores how cultural practices challenge dominant paradigms and imagine new forms of identity, belonging, and power in contemporary societies.
