Las escuelas del condado de Mitchell permanecerán cerradas para los estudiantes mañana, jueves 29 de enero. Este será un día laboral opcional para el personal. Mañana no habrá clases a distancia para los estudiantes, excepto para los alumnos de Mayland Early College High School. Sabemos que las condiciones meteorológicas varían en todo nuestro condado. Nuestro equipo de transporte ha estado revisando las carreteras hoy y todavía hay más de 20 carreteras que no se pueden transitar de forma segura debido al hielo. Todavía hay miembros del personal que no pueden salir de sus entradas y carreteras. Aunque nos encantaría que nuestros alumnos volvieran a la escuela y sabemos que algunos podrían asistir sin problemas relacionados con el clima, la ley nos obliga a proporcionar una enseñanza equitativa a todos los alumnos. Por lo tanto, no podemos combinar el aprendizaje a distancia y presencial en el mismo día. Ya estamos atentos a la posibilidad de que se produzcan más condiciones meteorológicas invernales a finales de esta semana y les animamos a que también estén preparados. Mitchell County Schools will be closed for students tomorrow, Thursday, January 29. This will be an optional workday for staff. There will be no remote learning for students tomorrow, except for Mayland Early College High School students. We know there are varying weather conditions across our county. Our transportation team has been checking roads today and we still have over 20 roads that cannot be safely run because of ice. We still have staff members who cannot get out of their driveways and roads. While we would love to get our students back to school and know there are some who could attend without any weather-related issues, the law requires us to provide equitable instruction for all students. Therefore, we cannot run a combination of remote and in-person learning on the same day. We are already watching the potential for more winter weather at the end of this week and encourage you to be prepared as well. We want students back in school as much as you do and are ready for them to return when it is safe to do so.

Say hello to Megean Wantz, who has won a $700 Back to School Supply Grant from National Life Group!

Megean is a high school English teacher for Mitchell County Schools. With a background as a librarian and elementary teacher, she brings creativity and inclusivity to her teaching, often using hands-on activities like Bingo or scavenger hunts to make learning English engaging and fun. She prioritizes student progress, especially in building confidence with speaking, and ensures every learner feels valued.

How is she planning to use her grant? By stocking up on supplies to support her students’ skill development—things like Spanish-English books or headsets for listening activities tied to the WIDA ACCESS test. She's also planning to fund rewards like ice cream parties or field trips to celebrate students' hard work after testing. All of these initiatives will make a huge difference in giving students the tools and motivation they need.

Next week, September 22-26, is School Bus Ridership Week across school districts in North Carolina. The funding that Mitchell County Schools gets for transportation is dependent on the number of students who ride a school bus during this week. Even if your child rides the bus occasionally, we ask that they please ride as many days as possible next week.
