Representations are at the heart of NY's Numeracy Initiative. But knowing they matter and knowing what they actually look like in your classroom? Two very different things.

On April 29th, we're digging into exactly that.

📊 Using Representations to Build Number Sense
Aligned to NY Brief 6 | April 29 | 4 PM EST | FREE

This session is grounded in real classroom practice. You'll hear from Marissa Pennington, an educator from Brooklyn, who'll share what using representations actually looks like in the classroom — and how it's working for her teachers and students.

You'll also work through 2–3 math tasks that surface multiple representations and leave with three teacher moves you can use immediately.

If you're a NY math teacher navigating the Numeracy Initiative in your classroom, this one's for you.

Many students struggle in math because they lack number sense.

boaler—Struggly co-founder, Stanford professor, and author of Math-ish—suggests a simple shift:

Ask for the “ish” answer first.

280 Ă· 9? About 30-ish. đź’ˇ

Now students are reasoning, not just calculating.

It’s how we naturally make sense of numbers: through estimation and reasoning, not just exact answers. Start with the “ish” value so students can judge what’s reasonable before they calculate.

We talk a lot about productive struggle… but what does it actually mean?

There's a spectrum. On one end, students are bored. On the other, they're frustrated. But in the middle… they're persevering. That's the goal. 🎯

Professor Michael Jarry-Shore from one of our previous webinars said it best.

Which zone are your students in most often?

.boaler, co-founder of Struggly and Stanford math professor, breaks down one of the biggest myths in math education:

No one is born a "math person." That's not how brains work.

When students hit a hard problem and think "I'm just not good at math," their achievement spirals. But neuroscience tells us struggle is exactly what learning looks like — new pathways forming, connecting, strengthening.

"This is hard" means your brain is working.

Struggly was built on this idea and research. Giving every student the right next step to push through the hard moment and come out the other side. đź’ˇ

Your belief in your students changes everything. 🪞

The research is clear:
đź“… High expectations = 5 extra months of learning
🥉 Teacher estimates of achievement = the #3 most impactful factor in student success
✨ The Pygmalion Effect = when you believe they can, they do

So what does that mean for us as teachers?

Walk into every lesson believing all of your students can reach grade-level content. Your job isn't to decide who's ready — it's to find the staircase that gets them there.

That's exactly what Struggly was built to do. 🪜

Every task, every problem, every moment of productive struggle is a step on that staircase — designed to meet kids where they are and bring them to where they need to be.

Your students are capable. Let's build the path together.
