The Lewis acid–base theory is the most powerful way to understand organic chemistry because it focuses directly on what actually drives reactions: the movement of electrons. In this framework, a Lewis base donates a pair of electrons, while a Lewis acid accepts that pair. When you look at reactions through this lens, everything becomes simpler and more unified. Instead of memorizing separate reaction types, you can see that they all follow the same fundamental idea—electrons flow from an electron-rich species to an electron-poor one.

This idea maps perfectly onto the core language of organic chemistry: nucleophiles and electrophiles. A nucleophile is just a Lewis base—it donates electrons—while an electrophile is a Lewis acid—it accepts them. With this perspective, nearly all organic mechanisms can be understood as interactions between these two roles. What curly arrows actually mean

Curly arrows represent the movement of electrons, not atoms.

A full (double-barbed) curly arrow shows the movement of a pair of electrons (2 electrons).

It always goes:
FROM where the electrons currently are
TO where the electrons will end up

Curly arrows represent the movement of a pair of electrons, showing where they originate and where they are going during a reaction.

That’s essentially the foundation of reaction mechanisms.

Where arrows start and end

To read them correctly:
Start point (tail):
A lone pair (on atoms like O, N, etc.)
A bond (meaning those bonding electrons move)
End point (head):
An atom (forming a new bond)
A bond between atoms
Sometimes an atom, breaking a bond and giving that atom a lone pair

Why this matters
Curly arrows let you:
Track bond formation and breaking
Understand how reactions actually happen step-by-step
Predict products instead of memorizing them
They’re basically the language of electron flow in organic chemistry.

One key clarification
Not all arrows are the same:
Double-barbed arrow (most common):
→ movement of 2 electrons
Single-barbed arrow (fishhook):
→ movement of 1 electron (used in radical chemitry)

Preparing for chemistry AP?

My plan to help prepare a student for AP Chemistry is to first identify and reteach any concepts they may have missed or misunderstood. Because AP Chemistry is cumulative, each topic builds on previous material, so it’s essential to have a strong foundation. I can step in to clarify and strengthen those foundational concepts to ensure there are no gaps in understanding.

However, success in an AP course requires more than just understanding the material during tutoring sessions. It takes consistent effort, dedication, and regular practice. The AP exam covers all concepts from throughout the year, so students must commit to reviewing, practicing problems, and mastering the material over time. I can provide the guidance and support, but the student’s commitment and practice are key to truly being prepared.
