I have joined the Austin Partners in Education Mentors Program. You can too!
MENTORING. LUNCH OUTSIDE WITH FALL COLOR. Just 30 minutes seems such a short time, but in the life of a child who can have an adult's complete attention, it can be a great gift. My mentoring experience has proven this. Teachers at this school are terrific, the best, but they still have many students. When I come, just saying, "Tell me about your day,:" gets my mentee telling stories and sharing. Good times!!

APIE is a nonprofit organization that connects the community and the classroom to promote academic excellence and personal success for all students in AISD.

DID YOU KNOW? APIE mentors range in age from 19 to 83! Just goes to show you can make a difference at any age. As we close out National Mentoring Month, we want to thank all of our mentors who strengthen our community by taking the time to connect with students each week.

Today is Thank Your Mentor Day, and we joined Communities In Schools of Central Texas and Seedling to celebrate Austin-area mentors at City Hall! The City of Austin Governmentissued a proclamation recognizing January as National Mentoring Month, presented by Mayor Pro Tem Alison Alter.

Dr. Alter said that making a difference in students lives’ requires “meaningful, individual connections and people willing to show up week after week to build those relationships.” We’re proud to have such a great group of mentors in our community who are champions for local students!

Mentoring amplifies meaningful connections that can stand the test of time! APIE mentor Sydney Benter says that her weekly lunch meetings with her mentee "survived middle school, a pandemic, wait-listed high school enrollment for her and a season of professional uncertainty for me. My mentee is dynamic, quick-witted and emotionally intelligent. We have great conversation and always pick right up where we left off!"

Thanks to Sydney for sharing her mentoring experience! You can learn more about our mentoring program and sign up to get matched with an Austin ISD student at

Our Story

APIE was originally created in 1983 as Adopt-A-School by the Austin Independent School District and the Greater Austin Chamber of Commerce before becoming Austin Partners in Education, an independent 501(c)(3) in 2004. We work in partnership with Austin ISD to reinvent the urban-school experience and build a talent pipeline of local students to grow the regional economy. Since our founding, we have trained and placed more than 16,000 tutors and mentors, who have supported over 35,000 Austin ISD students.

Our academic support and mentoring programs increase access to higher education. We utilize best practice learning models with proven results that have received recognition from the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and have been cited as an example of Better Use of Community Resources by the U.S. Department of Education. We were also honored by the White House Initiative in Educational Excellence for Hispanics.
