Remember to let your kids play games. Ours love to play Monopoly and learn great lessons doing so. They even invent interesting side rules like bank loans and prepaying for discounted rents. By letting them explore the way money works, they learn important lessons.

It's time to prep for Halloween... If you don't want to force your children to eat all their candy (haha), you might want to start asking them about where they might want to donate some of what they don't really want to keep. Have that discussion BEFORE they get the candy so it's easier to remove it on November 1st. It's a great lesson in giving, and the added benefit is getting some sugar out of the house.

Fighting the "gimmies"? They are often accompanied with temper tantrums and cries of "I NEED IT!" and are as common as colds this time of year. One solution I like is to ask your kids to pick some of their toys they don't play with anymore to give away to kids who don't have any toys. Explain that your playroom is an outlier and most kids don't have many toys. If you're wondering how many to give away, a good rule of thumb is one per year of age. Not only will you make room for new toys, but you'll also teach a valuable lesson.

The holiday season is around the corner. Have you thought about the lessons you want to teach your children about money? It's hard to teach without a plan - but now's a great time to start. There is an old Chinese proverb that says "The best day to plant a tree was twenty years ago. The next best day is today."

Redefining Christmas Spirit | pigsandbricks-copy 11/25/2018

I wrote this post a few years ago and it might be a nice way to combat the consumerism of the season:

Redefining Christmas Spirit | pigsandbricks-copy Last year I wrote about one of my family’s holiday gift-giving traditions and wanted to revisit the idea this year before we get into the swing of the holidays....

What messages are you sending your kids on Black Friday, Cyber Monday and Giving Tuesday? What do you want them to learn? How can you spend 5 minutes with your spouse to come up with a solid plan to use this time of year to teach your children some great lessons?

2018 YPO EDGE & GLC Singapore 03/09/2018

Great to spend some time with my YPO friends in Singapore!

Clint Greenleaf, CEO of HomePlate Peanut Butter, brought his passion for raising financially fit children to Singapore using a three-step plan of being aware, have a plan and adapt the plan. “The first step is realizing that our children are picking up lessons on money all the time – where we are deliberate about it or not,” Greenleaf explains. “Next, in creating a plan, you need to develop it with your spouse for each of your children, as each child is different and what motivates one may be different from another. Finally, be ready to adapt the plan as we all have great plans and ideas until life gets in the way."
