Butler School of Music alumnus Jeffrey Jones-Ragona returned to campus to share how he built a career in comic opera, speaking with students about life after graduation, conducting, and leading productions as music director of Gilbert and Sullivan Austin. During the visit, students heard musical demonstrations, asked questions about the profession, and learned how Butler alumni continue to shape Austin’s vibrant performing arts scene.

Being in Texas, I’m not sure if this counts as out-of-the-box thinking, but it’s certainly cool. Associate Professor of Music Theory Chelsea Burns brought a live bluegrass jam into her sophomore theory class, giving classically trained students a real-time look at how music comes together on the fly, no sheet music and no safety net.
