You may have noticed I’ve been a little quiet online lately...and that’s because I’ve been in the process of beginning a new job!

I’m happy to share that I’ve recently accepted the Digital Communications Specialist position with the Texas Music Educators Association 🎶⁠

It has been an incredible experience running Blue Moon Bassoon for the last two years as a full-time endeavor, but I am thrilled to be joining a great team of people here in Austin to support thousands of music educators and ensure access to high-quality music education for all students in Texas.

Blue Moon Bassoon LLC - Our Story

Who We Are

Founded by Amanda Pierce, Blue Moon Bassoon LLC offers private lessons in Austin, TX and sells reeds and books shipped nationwide.

Amanda (Turley) Pierce is a private bassoon teacher in Austin, Texas with over 10 years of teaching experience. She makes and sells reeds nationally and recently published her first book, the Blue Moon Bassoon Songbook for Beginning and Intermediate Bassoonists. During the summers Mrs. Pierce is an instructor at Bocal Majority Bassoon Camp and University of Texas Longhorn Music Camp.

In addition to her teaching and performing experiences, Amanda has studied bassoon repair, cleaning and adjustment with renowned instrument technician, Carl Sawicki. She currently teaches 40+ bassoon students of all ages in AISD, LTISD, and EISD and performs as a freelance bassoonist in Austin.

Amanda has performed with the Austin Opera, Austin Symphony Orchestra, Brazos Valley Symphony Orchestra, Tallahassee Symphony Orchestra and Sinfonia Gulf Coast. As an arts administrator and fundraiser, Mrs. Pierce has worked with the Cleveland Orchestra, Bravo! Vail Valley Music Festival and the Long Center for the Performing Arts. She currently serves as Executive Director of the Austin Symphonic Band.

Blue Moon Bassoon Songbook

Over 100 Lines of classical and folk tunes to teach you everything you need to know about the bassoon!

Amanda was inspired to create the BMB Song Book in 2017. After years of teaching, she was looking for a book that offered more fun melodies and challenging notes and rhythms for bassoonists. The songs are sequenced to explore a variety of bassoon specific techniques including half holing, rolling, flicking, vibrato and tenor clef. Melodies are set in familiar keys and time signatures with increasing variety as the book advances.

This book will help young bassoonists explore the more challenging melodic, rhythmic and musical elements which they often miss out on in band repertoire. The fun, storybook format and catchy tunes keep students engaged as they develop new skills and explore new styles and composers.

Handcrafted Bassoon Reeds Made in Austin Texas

Amanda began making reeds in 2004 and honed her skills under the instruction of George Sakakeeny at Oberlin Conservatory. Each Blue Moon Bassoon reed is handcrafted and designed to allow a relaxed embouchure with flexibility in pitch and a rich core sound. This reed making style prioritizes ease of articulation and stability, making them accessible to a wide range of players.

Standard reeds are made with Barton Cane Van Hoesen Shape and finished to a length of 2 1/8 inch then tip profiled on a Rieger tip profiler. Every reed is tested on a 7000 series Heckel Bassoon.
