ANSWERS: Several people said the dead vines and power lines. That’s correct. But there are two other less obvious answers. The first is the road. Cars driving by can spark fires, such as tossed ci******es and dragging trailer parts. Normally that’s a bigger problem where grass is un mowed, but here some of the dead vines reach the ground. The more obscure answer is dead center: the old wood privacy fence. Firefighters hate these. They’re standing tinder that can carry fires straight to homes.

A lot of people say clear the mountain cedars because they’re highly flammable. That’s only if they’re dead, dying, or small bushes surrounded by grass.

Who can tell me 4 issues in this photo that make this oak tree cover MUCH more flammable?

It’s getting bad. It’s also been reported in Hays and Gillespie counties. It appears to target bluestem, so if you have mostly KR, it could be good to seed Indian Grass, Side Oats Grama, Tall Dropseed, etc. this fall. For decades we believed removing wood debris from waterways improved ecosystem health. But we were wrong and nature was right.

But now, in the Pacific Northwest, logs are being helicoptered in and strategically placed within the riparian zones to slow down water and protect banks.

This is what we should be doing in Texas karst country.

It’s being called the biggest stream restoration ever in the Northwest. The Yakama Nation is using a helicopter to fly in more than 6,000 logs to create fish habitat in remote parts of Washington.
