IT WAS A GAME CHANGER! 🤩

Don’t forget to share with a mom friend!

I’m Erin 👋 a judgment-free lactation provider and pedi NP. Follow for inclusive infant feeding support.

Breast gymnastics was the most helpful tool while breastfeeding Elliot.

Three times I used it this year:
🤸‍♂️When I was traveling when Elliot was 2.5 months and got a clogged duct
🤸‍♂️ When Elliot started sleeping through the night and I woke up with mild discomfort
🤸‍♂️ While weaning and having discomfort

It helps elongate ducts and move milk

The key is being GENTLE.
Like, super duper gentle.

Thank you to for introducing this concept. It has been so helped and saved me (and my sister and friends).

Have you heard of breast gymnastics? Did it help you?

If it isn’t spit ups, it’s blow outs, amirite?

Having a baby with frequent spit up can be frustrating and confusing.

It’s hard to determine what is normal vs what is reflux.

Hi 👋 I’m Erin - a PNP, CLC and mom of two boys. Follow for judgments-free baby feeding content. Let’s work together to solve your baby feeding problems.

Here are some things I’m thinking about when I’m determining normal spit up vs reflux vs overactive letdown.

🍃 How much weight is the baby gaining per day or week? (not the only measurement tool, but it does give clues)
🍃 What is baby’s behavior while eating? What is behavior like immediately after eating? What is it like between feeds?
🍃 How are poops and wet diapers? Is the baby a gassy baby or not really?
🍃 are there any patterns in timing or time of day?
🍃 What is baby eating? How much? How long does it take to take a bottle? What bottle and flow rate are they using?
🍃 Are they feeding at the breast? How long is a typical feed? What are baby’s behaviors at the breast? Do they ever pop off and on? If so, when?
🍃 Are there days you don’t notice it as much?

Sometimes we can figure it out right away. Sometimes I have parents observe for 3-5 days, keep track of spit ups, and report back to find correlations.

Can spit ups be normal? Yes!
Can there be more going on? Also yes!

I had one very spitty baby and one who barely spit up. The difference was wild!

Did your baby spit up a lot? Have they been diagnosed with reflux?

These are my favorite!

I think I’d choose a great sleeper and supportive partner.

What would you choose?

A freakin nightmare…Even as a former PICU nurse who has done CPR IRL.

(Comment SAFETY to get a printable safety checklist for your fridge to keep your baby safe!)

It was a piece of penne pasta cooked very soft and cut.

I threw off his tray, unbuckled him and did the back blows.

I yelled for help.

We both cried a ton after.

This is NOT to convince you to not do baby-led weaning.

This is to remind you that EVERYONE needs to know what to do if a baby chokes.

And NEVER leave your baby alone while eating. Even for a few seconds.

Have you heard of high lipase?

Unfortunately I learned about it WAY too late (after freezing about 300 ounces of milk that Max refused).

We tried mixing the milk with fresh milk and adding vanilla. No luck.

This is why I recommend every pumping mama defrost some milk and do “tests” by bottle feeding frozen milk every few weeks in the beginning.

We had to scald all of my breastmilk from 3-12 months.

This is the process I followed:
🍃 Combine breastmilk at the same temperature into a sauce pan
🍃 Turn up to medium heat (I did it more slowly)
🍃 Remove from heat when there are tiny bubbles around the edges
🍃 Use a funnel to pour milk into storage containers
🍃 Freeze as usual

It was a lot of work, but it solved the problem.

And to answer your question, yes, scalding milk does destroy some antibodies and nutrients, but it was necessary for us.

Any questions? Did you have high lipase?

This might be the worst feeling ever…

When you think everything is going great with feeding, yet you get to your baby’s appointment and they haven’t been gaining weight well…

I’ve been there myself and it happens ALL THE TIME with the moms I see for feeding support.

If your baby has any of these signs, please see your pediatric provider and a lactation professional ASAP.

Temporary supplementation (or sometimes long term) may be needed and milk supply should be assessed.

Here’s the hard part feeding expends A LOT of energy when babies are tiny. They unfortunately don’t have a lot of excess energy to spend.

Sometimes they are getting such little milk yet they are using a lot of energy to feed. It’s a downward spiral because if they are spending so much energy to sustain a feed, this can make them sleepier for the next feed and so on.

A licensed medical professional needs to assess your baby and figure out what is going on. They should offer solutions to make it better. This does not mean they are sabotaging your breastfeeding journey.

Sometimes babies need some extra calories up front to have the energy to remove milk from the breast to increase milk supply.

This is how many moms get in the triple feeding cycle.

This is why seeing lactation is important in addition to your pediatric provider.
