Baby-led feeding doesn’t have to be hard!

You don’t have to make special food for your baby/toddler (unless you want)
You don’t have to cut food into stars (unless you want)
You don’t have to only feed your baby food that is red, white or blue (unless you want)

Make it easy and modify the food you’re eating!

Also - I still get nervous with hot dogs and new eaters. You can absolutely avoid them until your baby starts to chew and really break down spongy foods or cut them into even smaller pieces. The hot dogs should have any thick skin removed.

Check out the email I sent to my mailing list for more information on different summertime foods.

Have you planned anything special for the 4th of July weekend? What are you feeding your baby/toddler?

Are you gearing up to start solids?

These are four things I’m doing with E to help him when he starts solid foods:
🥑 Lots of tummy time and floor time to help strengthen his core muscles
🍌 Encouraging the use of different types of textured teethers - including these spoons. We also use a vibrating baby toothbrush which was recommended by our feeding therapist SLP.
🥦 Modeling how to eat and letting him sit at the table during mealtimes. *note - this doesn’t happen every meal. I try to do it whenever I can.
🥕 Letting him know that his high chair is a fun place. I give him toys while I’m cooking and then take him out when he starts to fuss.

***you do not have to do ANY of these things, but being proactive and working on developmental milestones is always good.

When should you start doing this? As early as you want with modeling how to eat and around 4 months for the rest - make sure your baby can sit in the highchair safely.

Baby cereal: use it or skip it?

I often hear older school pediatric providers saying that baby cereal should be a baby’s first food.

There ARE a lot of good reasons to use it, though it is up to you to decide if you want to feed it to your baby.

I opted to use it as an easy breakfast mixed with a homemade purée with some wild flavors. I liked that Max would have a good source of iron to prevent anemia.

I skip rice-based cereals, though.

Why? They can be constipating and your baby’s digestive system is still maturing.

Rice is also the biggest culprit for arsenic in food.

Comment GUIDE and I will send you a FREE guide to add flavor and texture to your baby’s foods.

Pumpkin spice “ice cream” or purée
1/2 large banana
1/2 cup pure pumpkin purée
1/4 cup coconut cream (I like cream better than milk but that would also work)
1/4 tsp pumpkin pie spice
Optional 1/4 tsp vanilla (alcohol free)

Mash together for an advanced purée or use a food processor for a traditional purée.
