What a day! Audubon County Economic Development & Tourism put on an awesome Career Day! AHS Juniors attended this great event and engaged with 20+ different employers, including lots of AHS alumni. Students' meaningful conversations were part of a career exploration game hosted by the Audubon Retired Educators organization, complete with prizes and cookies! Thanks to all the businesses and organizations that took the time to attend this event and interact with our students!

Skills pay the bills! Tradespeople earn great pay and benefits! Check out this graphic from the Central Iowa Building Trades Unions with the wage hour rates for union journeyworkers!

Most journeypersons earn a “base rate” of approximately $35 to $40 per hour. Base rate is the pre-tax hourly wage on a journeyperson’s paycheck. He or she will earn this rate for each hour worked. Apprentices usually start at around 60% of the journeyperson base rate, and receive regular raises until they reach journeyperson status. Promotion to foreman and other roles result in additional raises.

Tradespeople also receive great benefits that are included in the “total wage package” below. The total wage package includes not only the base rate pay but also the amount that is being contributed on the employee’s behalf towards family health insurance coverage and retirement/pension. These are tax-free benefits that are not deducted from your paycheck! They also follow you from employer to employer, which means never starting over!
