The final Fundamentals of Long Range class of 2026 is in the books.

Thank you to everyone who joined us throughout this year’s Fundamentals classes. It was great to see shooters continue building confidence, refining their marksmanship, and strengthening the skills that matter most. Solid fundamentals are the foundation of precision shooting, and the progress we’ve seen this year has been outstanding.

While this was our final Fundamentals class, we still have several opportunities to train with us:

• September 12–13 – LR Hunter
• October 11–12 – Make It to a Mile

We’re also have a limited number of private lessons and small group classes dates open over the next couple of months that you can DM to book.

September 11 – LR Skills Clinic
A full day dedicated to building solid fundamentals, refining positional shooting, and sharpening wind-reading skills. The perfect tune-up before LR Hunter.

September 12–13 – LR Hunter
Designed for hunters who want to become more confident and capable in the field. Learn to build stable shooting positions, make ethical long-range shots, and develop the decision-making skills needed when the moment matters.

October 10–11 – Make it to a Mile
Our flagship advanced course. Learn the science and ex*****on behind consistently engaging targets all the way to 1,760 yards.

This morning we had the opportunity to host a free Long Range Skills Clinic exclusively for junior shooters, and it couldn’t have gone any better. The morning was focused on fi****ms safety, understanding how the rifle works, and building the fundamental skills that every long-range shooter needs.

By the end of the day, every shooter was making impacts at 1,050 yards. More importantly, they left with confidence, new skills, and huge smiles on their faces.

Junior shooters are the future of our sport. If we want long-range shooting to continue to grow, we need to invest in the next generation. Start them young, teach them the right way, emphasize safety above everything else, and never forget to keep it fun. That’s how lifelong shooters are made.

Finding the fun again.

Watching new shooters recognize what they’re doing wrong, make the right adjustments, and then see the results downrange is what this is all about. Somewhere along the way, that feeling got lost for a little while.

This sport is about problem-solving, personal improvement, overcoming challenges, and having fun behind the rifle. There will always be difficult stages, bad days, and lessons learned the hard way—but the drive to improve and the enjoyment of the process are what keep us coming back.

When the fun disappears completely, it’s probably time to hang up the rifle. For now, I’m focused on getting back to what made me love this sport in the first place and I am hoping that shows to the students on the range

PLEASE READ if you plan to attend the WCLR Open Range Day on July 19.

LOCATION: Quail Point Hunt Club. Continue approximately half a mile past the clubhouse on Road 14, and the range will be on the right. Please DO NOT enter the clubhouse or contact Quail Point staff with questions. They will be busy running sporting clays and their own events. We will handle everything related to Open Range Day at the range.

RANGE HOURS: 7:00 AM–1:00 PM
You may arrive anytime during those hours, final check-in is at 12:30 PM. Anyone arriving after 12:30 will be turned around.

Before shooting, you must check in at the WCLR tent, sign a waiver, pay the $50 range fee, read the range rules, and receive a wristband.

We will have paper targets at 100 yards, steel available out to 1,050 yards, and all WCLR match props open for use.

IMPORTANT: If you have never shot beyond 100 yards, this is not the event to try long-range shooting for the first time. This is primarily a give-back day for shooters who have attended WCLR classes or competed in our matches. With the expected turnout, we need shooters who already understand long-range shooting and can operate safely without individual instruction.

FI****MS: This is a bolt-action rifle event only unless you have received prior approval from me to use a gas gun. California-compliant gas guns create additional safety concerns during malfunctions and will not be allowed without prior approval.

Leave all pistols in your vehicle. There is no need to carry a handgun on the range, especially in an unknown holster that create unnecessary muzzle-safety concerns.
CALIBERS: .223 Re*****on through mid-powered .30-caliber cartridges. Contact us beforehand if you are unsure whether your rifle or caliber is approved.
Your gear must be mobile because vehicles will not be permitted up the hill.

BRING A RANGEFINDER. There will be absolutely no shooting at targets unless you have positively identified the target and confirmed its distance. Target distances change depending on your shooting location.

Rare Open Range Day – Next Sunday

We don’t open the range to the public very often, but next Sunday we’re making an exception.

From 7:00 AM to 1:00 PM, you’re welcome to come out, check in, sign a waiver, and spend the morning shooting at your own pace. Show up anytime during those hours, we’ll have everything set up and ready to go.

What will be available:
Zero line with paper targets
Steel targets from 200 to 1,050 yards
Match props open for practice

Plenty of time to confirm your zero, practice positional shooting, or just enjoy a morning behind the rifle
Cost is $50 per shooter.

We’ll be going cold at 1:00 PM so everyone can get off the range before the afternoon heat sets in.

We get asked all the time if our Woodland range is open to the public. The answer is almost always no, so opportunities like this are extremely rare. If you’ve wanted to see the range, get some practice in, or just spend a few hours shooting without being in a class, this is your chance.

No registration required, just show up ready to shoot.

Hunting season is won long before opening day.

The WCLR Long Range Hunter is a two-day, field-focused training program built to prepare hunters to make confident, ethical shots when the opportunity finally presents itself. Whether you're hunting deer, elk, antelope, or any western big game, success ultimately comes down to one thing—a well-placed shot.

This course bridges the gap between precision rifle marksmanship and real-world hunting applications, giving you the knowledge and confidence to perform when it matters most.

Day One focuses on building a solid foundation. We'll review the fundamentals of precision rifle marksmanship, evaluate rifle setup, confirm zero, validate ballistic data, and confirm your dope out to 800 yards. The afternoon transitions into a positional shooting clinic where you'll learn to build stable, efficient shooting positions using the same types of terrain and supports you'll encounter while hunting.

Day Two is dedicated to practical field skills. You'll work through our tripod clinic while covering external ballistics, wind reading and wind calling, tripod setup, target engagement, and field shot ex*****on. Every drill is designed to prepare you for realistic hunting scenarios where first-round impacts matter.

Is there such a thing as the perfect class?

Every class is rewarding, but every once in a while everything just comes together. This weekend was one of those classes.
Every shooter showed up with a solid foundation, well-built rifles, and a mindset focused on learning. They asked great questions, put in the work, and took full advantage of nearly perfect conditions. Day one gave us calm, forgiving weather to build fundamentals, while day two brought a challenging 12–22 mph variable wind that let everyone put those new skills to the test.

By the end of the weekend, every shooter was consistently making impacts out to 1,050 yards. More importantly, they left with the confidence, knowledge, and process to continue building those skills on their own.
