The Office of Outreach Global fosters personal and professional growth by connecting students, faculty, staff, and alumni with service-learning opportunities across Africa, Asia, and Europe, alongside local initiatives like the Fulbright in the Classroom program. The work could be done without our partners in the College of Education, specifically through the Department of Special Education, Rehabilitation and Counseling—represented by professor Chenetra D. Buchannon—and the Truman Pierce Institute—represented by director Jason Bryant. Through these partnerships, the university promotes the expansion of global perspectives for both local communities in Alabama and international partners.

Auburn University, one of the South’s largest universities, is a leader in arts and applied science education, and it brings a tradition of spirit to the responsive career preparation it offers.

Congratulations to Lee Sentell, who is retiring from his 23-year-tenure as director of the Alabama Tourism Department.

Sentell is a past member of Alabama Humanities’ board of directors, as well as a 2017 recipient of AHA’s Wayne and Sally Greenhaw Service to the Humanities Award. The honor recognizes individuals who have made substantive contributions specifically to the work and mission of the Alabama Humanities Alliance, and in service of the public humanities generally in Alabama.

Sentell has always had a passion for championing Alabama’s history, culture, literature, and the arts — all elements of the humanities. And we appreciate his ability to identify the humanities both as an investment in the cultural fabric of our state AND in the economies of our local communities.

Thank you, Lee, and we look forward to what’s next!

Auburn University Outreach’s Government and Economic Development Institute, known as GEDI, has been strengthening communities across Alabama for 50 years through training, education, and economic development resources. Each year, GEDI trains more than 1,200 government administrators representing all 67 Alabama counties and supports professional growth through continuing education opportunities. The institute recently awarded more than 3,300 continuing education units and 261 program completion certificates. For 42 years, GEDI has been preparing community leaders to help their communities thrive through its Intensive Economic Development Training course. GEDI also provides extensive community data and research resources that assist entrepreneurs, site selectors, and growing businesses in making informed decisions.
