This session will examine how su***de bereavement is understood within diagnostic systems and explore the ongoing debate around prolonged grief disorder in the DSM 5 TR. Dr. Schuurman will discuss the potential impact of diagnostic labels, the risks and benefits of pathologizing grief, and the value of grief informed and humanistic approaches when supporting su***de bereaved individuals. Participants will consider how labeling shapes care, identify grief informed practices, and critically evaluate dominant clinical paradigms related to loss.

The Preventing Su***de in Michigan Men program is offering two free virtual Assessing and Managing Su***de Risk trainings this summer. AMSR is a full day training designed to strengthen provider skills in recognizing, assessing, and managing su***de risk. Participants learn su***de specific interventions and how to develop collaborative treatment and safety plans.

Our June PRiSMM webinars will highlight two key areas of su***de prevention for clinicians and health care providers.
On June 17, Natalie Burns, LMSW, MA will offer a focused introduction to the Collaborative Assessment and Management of Suicidality (CAMS), covering CAMS philosophy, core assessment and treatment mechanics, and its drivers focused approach to care.
On June 24, Donna L. Schuurman, EdD, FT will examine how su***de bereavement is understood within diagnostic systems and explore the debate surrounding โprolonged grief disorderโ in the DSM 5 TR, including the impact of labeling grief and the value of grief informed, humanistic approaches.

We were glad to be at the ๐ฆ๐ฎ๐ด๐ถ๐ป๐ฎ๐ ๐๐น๐น ๐ ๐ฒ๐ปโ๐ ๐๐ฒ๐ฎ๐น๐๐ต ๐๐ฎ๐ถ๐ฟ today with community partners and the ๐๐ฎ๐ฝ๐ฝ๐ฎ ๐๐น๐ฝ๐ต๐ฎ ๐ฃ๐๐ถ ๐ฆ๐ฎ๐ด๐ถ๐ป๐ฎ๐ ๐๐น๐๐บ๐ป๐ถ ๐๐ต๐ฎ๐ฝ๐๐ฒ๐ฟ, and we appreciate their work in bringing the community together.
The Covenant HealthCare College of Medicine provided health screenings, and the Internal Medicine residency program supported clinical services throughout the event. We were grateful for the opportunity to share information on menโs mental health resources and su***de prevention initiatives.

Mental Health First Aid for Higher Education is coming to Saginaw on June 9. This free, in person certification course helps campus communities recognize signs of mental health or substance use challenges, offer supportive responses, and connect individuals with resources.
