UPDATE: The Iowa Cold Cases website is now back online. The site was being heavily crawled by a European bot network, and that IP address has since been permanently blocked.

The Pottawattamie County Sheriff’s Office would like to make residents aware of an upcoming mailing you may receive requesting donations to the Iowa State Sheriffs' & Deputies' Association (ISSDA).

This is part of an annual, statewide fundraiser conducted by Iowa Sheriffs. The letter invites recipients to become an Honorary Member of the Iowa State Sheriffs’ & Deputies’ Association Institute (ISSDAI), which helps support law enforcement resources and services across Iowa.

We understand some residents may find this mailing suspicious, especially since the return address may list a P.O. Box in Wellman, Iowa. Please know that this mailing is legitimate.

CORALVILLE — The human remains found last month, near S.T. Morrison Park and the Coralville Recreation Center, have been identified as a Coralville man who went missing in October 2023.

The Johnson County Medical Examiner’s Office notified police that staff at the University of Iowa Decedent Care Center confirmed the identity of Grant Wongsatorn Leonard, 32, by comparing his dental records from the missing person investigation, Police Chief Kyle Nicholson said in a news release.

The human remains found last month in Coralville have been identified as a Coralville man who went missing in 2023. Grant Wongsatorn Leonard, who was 29 when reported missing, was identified through dental records.

Womack was found dead in a Winneshiek County hay barn 40 years ago and remained unidentified until recent DNA testing identified him as Clifton Todd Womack, a 28-year-old from Ohio who disappeared in 1985.

The Winneshiek County Sheriff’s Office announced the closure of a 40-year-old cold case Friday.
