I Choose To Be

I Choose To Be A senior project to create awareness of the socially constructive concept of a woman’s image in our society, through the use of choreography.

For this independent study I will be choreographing an evening length work, demonstrating how women in our society are socially constructed and are told to live in a particular way. It will explore the social constructs of what it is to be a woman and the characteristics or qualities that are acceptable, such as; emotional, quiet, submissive, pretty, heterosexual, weak, etc. Through a variety of m

ovement phrases constructed by the choreographer in collaboration with the dancers, this study will show a story all to familiar to women. After identifying how women are socially constructed, this piece will then show how we can break down the barriers women face and how we should be accepting of all women and how they present themselves. Ultimately the project will reveal that not one woman is the same, but still an incredible person for the characteristics and qualities that society does not necessarily identify.
