So today is 08/08/2026
A day I’ve been eyeing for many years
25 years ago. Yes. 25 years ago today
I sat down and took my NJ EMT Certification exam
I have been a NJ EMT for 25 years
This was never supposed to be a career for me
It was truly volunteer and make friends and give back to the community
Well I made it a career
Worked in some of the craziest places
Worked in some rather violent places
I’ve worked with the best, baddest and the brightest
I have made friends for a lifetime
Won the NJ Outstanding Career EMT Award in 2015
Achieved many other awards and citations
Valor, Meritorious Service, CPR Saves and delivered 3 children in the field
Went to do 911 Dispatcher, Special Operations, Education and Supervision. Even served on the the Task Force
Went on to teach Emergency Services and Health and Safety at RVCC
Went on to be a Contributing Content Reviewer for EMS Textbooks

Even though I hung up my stethoscope last September and work my last street shift
I still am an active educator and that’s the best part. Teaching the upcoming providers who will replace us as we move to better opportunities
Thank you to those who have mentored me and helped me get out of my own way
Those who supposed my goals and aspirations
It’s been a wild 2 decades
Time is something we can never get enough of
Time never stops. Time is something we can’t get back
But I spent my time spanning the last 2 decades helping those in need in the worse times of their worse time of need

It’s with great sadness
Michael Winey a trusted friend and instructor with us here past away today
I’ve personally known Mike for over 20 years
He was a trusted friend and phenomenal instructor
We are truly blessed and grateful we had him here and the many calls and conversations about emergency services
You will be missed brother

Hey family
It’s been a while since we posted about OSHA and compliance
So let’s talk about OSHA and NJ First Responders
New Jersey is a state plan
What does this mean you might ask?
NJ PEOSHA (Public Employees OSHA) covers public employees
So this is towns and cities and the employees they employ
So how does this work with First Responders you might ask?
Police, Fire and EMS that work or volunteer for the town or city is covered by NJ PEOSHA
So you might ask what does this mean?
This means it covers all the regulations that are covered by 29 CFR.
This now branches off several regulations
29 CFR 1910 which is the general industry regulation
29 CFR 1926 which is the construction regulations
NJ PEOSHA has to adopt these minimum standards
So the regulations that are the most important to First Responders

29 CFR 1910.1030. The blood borne pathogen standard
You have to have annual training.
An exposure control plan
An infection control officer
Access to the Hep B shot (free of cost to you)
A means to report exposure and or injury

29 CFR 1910.1200. Hazard Communication
You have to have annual training
(You may know it as Right to Know)
You have to have a chemical inventory
This is simply put. You have to have a inventory of all chemicals
You have to have a Safety Data Sheet for all chemical all employees uses in a binder
This binder has to be updated when a new chemical is added and annually.

29 CFR 1910.134. Respiratory Protection
So if you are a First Responder and wear a respirator.
You have to fill out the respiratory protection questionnaire and then see a doctor and then be fit tested for a respirator (N95 and half face respirator)
For Firefighters. You have to fill out the same form and get fit tested for respirator and SCBA Mask)
You have to have a respiratory protection plan and a plan administrator

You have to maintain all records of everything
These records accessed by employees who ask
Failure to have these standards met can result in major fines and penalties and major problem
