This is definitely welcome relief for the Mississippi Gulf Coast shrimpers!

We can also do our part to support our Mayport shrimpers—stop by Safe Harbor Seafood Market and pick up a couple of pounds of fresh local Mayport shrimp. Supporting local means supporting our hardworking fishing community.

More great news for Mississippi: the USDA will purchase $20 million in wild-caught shrimp for schools and food banks through the permanent Section 32 program. This is welcome relief for our Gulf Coast shrimpers, who continue to face unfair competition from foreign imports flooding the domestic market. This purchase will help support our shrimp producers while putting high-quality, American-caught shrimp on the tables of families and children who need it most.

EXCITING NEWS FROM MLA

Caring for Helen Cooper Floyd Park
This summer, MLA joined The Veterans Phalanx in co-adopting Helen Cooper Floyd Park.

Helen Mae Cooper was born in Mayport Village in 1922 and married another Mayport native, Hilton Martin Floyd, in 1944. She began chronicling the stories of her beloved hometown at an early age and later became a successful journalist. She was the first woman to have a byline in the Jacksonville Journal and was an award winning columnist for the Ocean Beach Reporter. Helen is known as Mayport’s historian, with a distinctive storytelling style that recalls front-porch conversations about the people who shaped this historic working waterfront.

Earlier this summer, MLA joined the Timucuan Parks Foundation for a community cleanup at the park, helping to care for a place that holds its own important place in Mayport Village. Preservation goes beyond buildings and historic structures. It also means caring for the natural surroundings that carry history, memories, and meaning for our community.

We’re excited to partner with The Veterans Phalanx in supporting this special City of Jacksonville park. Our first cleanup event is scheduled for Saturday, October 3, 2026, 9:00 - 11:00 a.m. Stay tuned for more details by following Mayport Lighthouse Association on Facebook.

Singleton’s Seafood Shack looks and feels exactly like the rustic fishing-village restaurant its name promises. The Mayport institution has served seafood since 1969 and can even cook properly cleaned fish brought in by local anglers. Mark your calendars! Our next MLA Online Membership Meeting is September 29 @ 6:30pm via Zoom, and we’re excited to welcome lighthouse historian Neil Hurley as our guest speaker.

Neil’s research for his book "Florida’s Lighthouses in the Civil War" helped verify the true date of when the St. Johns River Lighthouse was first lit. While several sources report January 1, 1859, his work revealed that the Lighthouse was actually first lit on August 1, 1859.

We’re so happy to have Neil joining us to share more about his research and the history of the Lighthouse.
