Georgia Southern University Sport Management Program

This past week, at the Sport Marketing Association (SMA) Conference, Dr. Gregg Rich presented research that he and Mr. Conner Martin (Class of '24) conducted on humor and fandom's effects on social media advertisements for team-licensed merchandise. The research implemented Cue Utilization Theory as its framework.

Initial findings support that humor and team fandom have statistically significant, though relatively weak effect, on consumer perceived value of team-licensed merchandise. Of the two, team fandom had more influence on consumers' perceptions of merchandise value.

Mr. Martin started this research while an honors student at Georgia Southern as part of his honor thesis. He and Dr. Rich are currently developing a manuscript from his thesis for publication consideration.

This past Thursday, Jenna Schafer (BS Sport Management Alum), spent her day speaking to many of our undergraduates across several courses. Jenna is a recruiter for the Atlanta Braves and spearheads its trainee program. Our students learned a lot about the many exciting opportunities within the Braves organization--a leader in the industry!

Raymere Johnson, Class of 2023, started his sport career in minor league hockey as his senior internship. Following his internship, he secured a seasonal position as an Inside Sales Representative with Atlanta United FC. His hard work with the Atlanta United sales team led to another inside sales role with the Atlanta Falcons. Serving in this capacity, he learned PSL sales...

And recently, Raymere was promoted to a full-time position as a Group Sales Executive for Atlanta United. In his new role, as one of several initiatives in which he is now responsible, he helps lead Atlanta United FC's youth soccer program with Atlanta Area clubs. Congratulations Raymere!

Yesterday, undergraduate honors student, Conner Martin, successfully presented his thesis research at the Georgia Southern Student Scholars Symposium (GS4), "The Effects of Humorous Language in Social Media and Fandom Levels on Sport Consumers' Merchandise Value Perceptions."

Conner's presentation is the culmination of a publication worthy research study, two years in the making. Many thanks to local soccer club, Tormenta FC, who collaborated with him during the data collection process.

In May, Mr. Martin will be graduating with degrees in Sport Management and Marketing. Congratulations Conner!

Our first Feature Friday of the year is Semiah Bowden (Alumni, Class of 2020)! Semiah is currently the Postgraduate Community Relations Intern for the Philadelphia Eagles. Her favorite classes at Georgia Southern were taught by Dr. Gipson and Dr. Rundio because she loved the involvement of real life experiences, and they prove to be great role models as women in sports. Her advice for current students: “Always use your resources and never be afraid to explore areas in sport you may be interested in because ultimately you will land exactly where you want to be.” 🦅

This meeting is open to all undergraduate sport management students, but is especially important for students planning to complete SMGT 4735 in Spring or Summer of 2022. Requirements to enroll in SMGT 4735, differences between SMGT 4735 and other experiential opportunities, and searching for a full-time credited internship will be discussed.
