Certified Nurse Aides (CNAs) play an essential role in healthcare. They work alongside nurses to provide direct patient care in hospitals, long-term care facilities, and other medical settings. CNAs are responsible for a variety of tasks, including taking vital signs, assisting patients with personal care, and helping patients move around.

To become a CNA, you must complete a state-approved training program, which typically takes several weeks to several months. The program includes both classroom instruction and hands-on clinical experience. Once you've completed the program, you must pass a competency exam to become certified.

CNAs are in high demand, with the Bureau of Labor Statistics projecting a 21% job growth rate from 2019 to 2029. This high demand means that CNAs can find work in a variety of settings and have opportunities for career advancement.

Being a CNA is not just a job, it's a rewarding career that allows you to make a difference in the lives of others. If you're interested in pursuing a career in healthcare, becoming a Certified Nurse Aide is an excellent place to start.

A Typical CNA Work Schedule

We’ve already mentioned that where you are working plays a big role in the types of tasks you will perform as a CNA, but it can also impact your CNA work schedule. With a multitude of scheduling options available across different workplaces, it can be difficult to pinpoint a typical CNA work schedule. Still, there are a few guidelines that will help you understand what your work schedule will be like as a CNA.

How Many Hours at a Time? The Difference Between 8s and 12s

One of the biggest variables in CNA work schedules is whether you work 8 or 12 hours at a time. Some people prefer to work four or five 8-hour shifts, but others prefer to work longer each day for an extra day off. In this case, many hospitals and nursing homes allow CNAs to work three 12-hour shifts. Because each facility has different requirements for being full time (usually 32 or 40 hours per week) and not all facilities offer both 8-hour and 12-hour shifts, your actual weekly schedule options will vary dramatically between workplaces.

When Do You Work?

12-hour shifts are typically broken down into day shift and night shift with changes occuring between 6-8 in the morning and evening. 8-hour shifts are typically broken down into day, evening, and night shifts with shifts generally running from 7-3, 3-11, and 11-7. Some schedules overlap shifts to allow for easier transitions.

Most CNAs work a set time period so even if the days they work change week to week, they won’t be hopping from night shift to day shift and back again. Some CNAs, however, switch between shifts regularly. The work in hospitals and nursing homes is very different during different shifts so you may not really know which one you prefer until you start working. Some CNAs are hired for a specific shift from the outset.

Others are required to change shifts on a regular basis which requires using your time very effectively.
Do CNAs Work Weekends?

When it comes to healthcare, patients need just as much care on the weekends as they do on weekdays. CNAs are typically required to work every other weekend though some hospitals and nursing homes have specific weekend staff to cover Saturdays and Sundays.

I am soooo happy that I went to that school. It is truly an awesome school. I have searched many other CNA Schools but I wasn't very happy with what they offered. Then I came across the Covenant CNA School and when I read what they were offering I told myself this is it. This is the school I want to get my CNA license and so I did. I graduated in August of 2014. I've done my clinical at Budd Terrace and I have just finished my advanced clinical at Emory University Hospital. I really liked the hands on training at the clinical. It was an amazing experience that helped me a lot to become the CNA that I want to be. The instructors are very nice at Covenant CNA School and everyone of them want you to do your best to succeed. It might seem that they are too hard on you but all they want is that you will be successful in the healthcare field. I would highly recommend this school to anyone who wants to start working in healthcare. I loved going there and was excited to be there every day. They also have an instructor that will help you to prepare for the state exam. Not every school can or will offer that. It helped me a lot to prepare for the state exam and I passed. I am a licensed nursing assistant. I went there almost every day to practice the skills for the state exam and it helped me so much to know the skills.

This school is truly amazing. I was blown away how much they did for us. The classes were well taught. At the end of our classes I felt really confident that I will do well on the state test and that I will be able to use my knowledge for clinicals. During clinical week it seemed that they are a little bit hard on you but they really want to bring the best out of you. They really want to make sure that you will feel confident in what you are doing when you get hired somewhere. The school allows you to go to school and practice as much as you need or skill part of the state exam. There is an instructor who knows exactly how to prepare you for the state exams. The state written and skill test was really easy to pass for me and most of our classmate passed it on the first time. The school gives even gives you an opportunity to go for advanced clinicals to Emory Hospital where you get a chance to show what you know and possibly get hired. I just finished my two weeks at Emory University Hospital and had an interview. They will even help you with your resume and prepare you for the interview. I love this school and would recommend it to anyone. I like that they have both white and black people and that they treat everyone the same way. This school in my opinion is the best in the area.
