Social stories are important pictures and words that describe each step in the process of doing something so that a habit is formed.

Here’s an brief example … this social story can be posted and a walk thru can occur on a weekly.

Aliyah Rahman, a Minneapolis woman who has Autism, was violently dragged from her vehicle while on her way to a Dr’s appointment at the Brain Injury Center.

Rahman says that she is unable to process multiple commands at once and has to focus on lip reading when in a situation where multiple people are talking. Things parents of autistic children can do on Sunday to prepare them for the week ahead.

Practice the Morning Commute

If your child is starting a new school or route, do a "dry run" on Sunday. Drive the route or walk to the bus stop. This familiarizes them with the sensory experiences (sounds of the bus, sights on the road) before the pressure of Monday morning hits.

Happy 21st birthday to the inspiration behind Autistic Recreational Therapy Services, Joshua.

From a very tiny age, we knew that Joshua was different. It brings us great joy to see the fine young man that he has grown into.

Diagnosed with Autism at an early age, Joshua completed high school where he played in band, completed a year of college at Full Sail University and is now a full time college student at the Savannah College of Art and Design. He also worked at Kroger in high school and now works with ARTS during the Atlanta Braves season.

Our children can do it as long as there is a supportive team around them from school to home to work. Happy birthday, Josh!

Imagine your autistic child going missing and not knowing where he or she is for 50 long days.

The family of Emmanuel Garcia, a non-verbal teen recently experienced just that when Emmanuel was turned over to ICE instead of being reconnected with his mother.

This infuriates us and we want you to know that when one Mama cries, we all cry! We all fight!
