Newton County students are building the skills they need for success beyond high schoolโ€”and the results continue to show it! ๐Ÿ“ˆ

The percentage of Newton County Schools students passing industry-aligned End-of-Pathway Assessments (EOPAs) has climbed from 48% in FY23 to 70% in 2026โ€”a 22-percentage-point increase in just three years.

This sustained growth reflects NCSโ€™s continued focus on strengthening CTAE instruction, aligning learning with industry expectations, and ensuring students graduate with meaningful skills, credentials, experiences and options for what comes next.

Whether their next step is college, technical training, the military or the workforce, weโ€™re working to make sure our students are prepared to take it.

๐ŸŒŸ TEACHER OF THE YEAR SPOTLIGHT ๐ŸŒŸ

Our 2026-2027 Teacher of the Year Spotlight Series continues with Mr. Johnny Edwards, Newton High Schoolโ€™s Teacher of the Year! ๐ŸŽ๐ŸŽถ

Mr. Edwards has spent his entire 10-year Newton County Schools career at Newton High School, where he teaches Chorus and AP Music Theory.

His own experience as a student helped lead him to education. Inspired by the positive teachers who taught him, Mr. Edwards now has the opportunity to make that same kind of impact on the students who enter his classroom each day.

For Mr. Edwards, some of the best moments in teaching happen when everything suddenly clicks.

๐Ÿ’ฌ He loves seeing the proverbial โ€œlight bulbโ€ come on when a student finally grasps a conceptโ€”and especially enjoys watching students turn around and help their classmates understand it in their own โ€œstudent language.โ€

But the most important lesson Mr. Edwards hopes his students carry with them goes well beyond music.

โค๏ธ He wants every student to leave his classroom knowing two things: They were created to be phenomenal, and he cares about them.

And hereโ€™s a fun fact his students might not know: Mr. Edwards was born in Japan! ๐Ÿ‡ฏ๐Ÿ‡ต Outside of the classroomโ€”and away from the musicโ€”he enjoys spending time on the golf course. โ›ณ

Congratulations, Mr. Edwards! We are proud to celebrate you as Newton High Schoolโ€™s 2026-2027 Teacher of the Year!

๐Ÿ† Who will be Newton County Schoolsโ€™ NEXT Teacher of the Year? Stay tuned as we continue highlighting our outstanding school-level honorees on the road to our district celebration on September 23!
