FAA Recommends Spatial Disorientation Training for Business Aircraft Pilots 02/17/2026

InFO 26003 highlights a truth every pilot encounters: spatial disorientation can affect anyone. Flying by instruments isn’t intuitive; it’s a learned skill. When visual cues are absent, the mind can misinterpret orientation. Through systematic training, we can build deliberate habits that keep us safe. Since it can happen to even high-time pilots, "The worst thing a pilot can do is assume it will never happen to them..."

An Inspection Authorization (IA) allows Airframe and Powerplant (A&P) maintenance technicians to perform and approve annual inspections and sign off major repairs and alterations on aircraft. To be eligible for renewal of an inspection authorization for a 2-year period, an applicant must present evidence during the month of March of each odd-numbered year that the applicant still meets the requirements of § 65.91(c) (1) through (4).

Advanced Aircrew Academy has several modules approved in accordance with FAA Order 8900.1, Volume 3, Chapter 56, that can be used toward the minimum eight (8) unit Credit Hour IA Renewal requirements. Each module has an FAA Course Acceptance Number and, upon completion, provides a certificate that can be used in the renewal application.

You can purchase these modules independently, or for current customers, we can add/replace these modules in your established training plan as individual assignments, or add them to your curriculum.

Advanced Aircrew Academy's Winter Operations / Surface Contamination module reviews operations in ground icing conditions, including anti- and de-ice fluids, de-ice procedures, holdover times, and pre-takeoff contamination checks. Braking action reports, cold temperature altitude corrections, and contaminated runways are also presented.

The eLearning module is updated each year for changes to Holdover Time Tables, Cold Temperature Restricted Airports, and new case studies.

The NBAA Management Guide (section 2.4) recommends advanced flight crew training beyond FAA regulatory requirements as a best practice. That recommendation specifically cites Icing/Deicing Procedures training. This training module satisfies the NBAA training recommendation.
