Check out this clarinet concerto by J. M. Molter; one of the first for the instrument, written around 1740 (and the very first clarinet- in D- existed around 1710). Notice how there are very few sharps or flats played, as it simply wasn't possible with so few keys- doesn't it sound more like a clarino, or small trumpet, from the era? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DDAUpFZFSXM
