Motivational Interviewing is not about convincing someone to change. It is about helping clients explore their own reasons, values, and motivation for change.

Change is a process, not an event.

When working with individuals experiencing substance use challenges, understanding the Stages of Change model helps counselors meet clients where they are — rather than expecting everyone to be ready for action at the same time.

A client who is ambivalent may not need pressure. They may need understanding, exploration, and support to increase readiness for change.

Effective counseling begins with understanding the client’s current stage and using interventions that support movement forward.
