6th Annual WINDWIN RI Wind Turbine Competition
The WACTC Engineering, Drafting, & Design Level 1 students recently competed in the 6th annual WindWin RI wind turbine technology competition on Saturday, March 21st. The WACTC team competed against 17 other RI high school teams. The competition was hosted by the Community College of Rhode Island.
The competition required students to complete prerequisites of using turbine blade development software to design and predict the performance of the turbine blades, manufacture turbine blades using 3D printing methods, as well as test and record the blade performance in a wind tunnel prior to the competition. Students brought their highest performing blades, the data recorded during testing, and theoretical performance data generated by the blade design software and presented their findings to teams of judges. The judging teams included industry experts from companies involved in the manufacturing of wind turbine components, offshore wind turbine construction and maintenance, along with environmental impact professionals, and college professors.
Students competed in performance testing using wind tunnels to measure the turbine blade design, proper use of instrumentation, data recording, and safety.
🥳 Congratulations to Bronx Arnold, Jason Bender, Brody Berard, and Jensen Smigel for finishing 3rd out of 17 teams! Thank you to our competing students for their hard work, accomplishments, and for an outstanding job representing the Warwick Area Career & Technical Center’s Engineering, Drafting, & Design program!
