In an attempt to fulfill our funding agency requirement to track program participants we encourage current and former MBRS/RISE students to “like” our page on Facebook. Through our page we will keep you updated on program and institutional events happening at Morehouse School of Medicine. Please feel free to send any additional professional or personal information you would like featured on the page. Also, please forward this request to any former MSM MBRS/RISE students with whom you are still in contact.
Thanks in advance,

Morehouse School of Medicine MBRS RISE
The mission of the National Institute of General Medical Sciences (NIGMS) is to support research that increases understanding of life processes and lays the foundation for advances in disease diagnosis, treatment and prevention. NIGMS-funded researchers seek to answer important scientific questions in fields such as cell biology, biophysics, genetics, developmental biology, pharmacology, physiology, biological chemistry, biomedical technology, bioinformatics, computational biology, selected aspects of the behavioral sciences and specific cross-cutting clinical areas that affect multiple organ systems. To assure the vitality and continued productivity of the research enterprise, NIGMS also provides leadership in training the next generation of scientists as well as in developing and increasing the diversity of the scientific workforce.
RISE is a student development program for minority-serving institutions. The goal of the program is to increase the number of students from groups underrepresented in biomedical and behavioral research who complete Ph.D. degree programs in these fields. The program supports institutional grants with well integrated developmental activities that may include, but are not limited to, research experiences at on- or off-campus laboratories, specialty courses with a focus on critical thinking and development of research skills, collaborative learning experiences, research careers seminars, scientific reading comprehension and writing skills, tutoring for excellence, and travel to scientific meetings. Support is also available for evaluation activities.
The Morehouse School of Medicine (MSM) MBRS RISE predoctoral graduate students must complete the Course of Study required by the Graduate Education in Biomedical Sciences program. In addition the students are also required to participate in the following:
• Mentor-directed biomedical research
• MSM RISE developmental workshops and seminars
• Presentation of research findings at the MSM Annual Curtis L. Parker Student Research Day Symposium
• Presentation of research findings at the national meeting of a scientific association.
