One of my favorite activities is integrating music into lessons. Whether it's having students analyze their favorite song lyrics for figurative language or creating a playlist based on a story's elements, music can be a powerful tool to encourage reading.

Have a child who has low reading stamina? Begin with short reading sessions. Start with 5-10 minutes of focused reading and gradually increase the time as the student becomes more comfortable. Increasing reading stamina is important--especially as students approach the higher grades. They will be expected to read longer and even more complex texts.

Expose your child to a variety of genres like fiction, non-fiction, poetry, and graphic novels. This keeps reading interesting. One of my favorite sub genres is science-fiction! I especially enjoy the short stories by Ray Bradbury and exposed my students in summer school to his short stories.

Before starting a new book or passage, talk to your child about what they already know about the topic. This helps activate their prior knowledge and makes reading more engaging. It is the #1 tip I relay to my students when teaching!

Ask questions: You can boost comprehension skills by asking your child questions about the story they are reading. Questions like 'What happened at the beginning?' or 'Why did the character do this/that?' can help them think critically and understand the text better.

Consistent practice is key! Encourage your child to read for at least 20 minutes each day. This can be a mix of reading aloud and silent reading. Choose books that interest them to keep it fun and engaging.
