A bit of my story for those who are new. And also a new little revelation I’ve had this summer - fully surrendering to God putting music in my life has been so freeing and so exciting.

A year ago I never thought I’d be missing my piano while I traveled, I never thought I’d miss teaching and look forward to lessons with the kiddos, and I never thought I’d be actively pursuing music beyond what I had to do to for a job.

But here we are, God is good, and the creativity is absolutely flowing.

Also incredibly thankful for the coach that I found (on Instagram actually, definitely an answer to prayer) - working with Dr. Austin Pancner | Recovery + Fitness Training had absolutely changed my life literally bc now I can take walks outside, play the piano, AND do art all in the same day and not regret it with migraines for the rest of the week. Incredible.

Some of these may seem super obvious but it’s amazing what you can do when your brain isn’t trying to remember everything it’s ever learned.

Also just because you’ve been playing for a while and are a pro doesn’t mean you can’t make notes of the obvious. 🤷🏽‍♀️

(I promise I’ll share about others music besides Liszt eventually but I’m so obsessed with this piece I can’t think straight sometimes)

Care about the student first and the music next.

People can tell when you are genuinely interested in them as a person rather than a project to be made better. I’ve had piano teachers on both ends of the spectrum and the teacher that cares only about the music crushed me every single lesson (didn’t last very long with her, don’t worry).

Students pick up on your enthusiasm for the art but they’ll also pick up a negative perspective if you end up displaying that in their lessons instead. Don’t be afraid to be the weird teacher that thinks little things are super cool. In my experience, those teachers are actually way cooler than the rest. ;)

Color coding sheet music may be controversial for some, but it’s been a game changer with all the music I have to learn as a pianist. My attention span gets quite short sometimes too, so having one color block to work on at a time helps keep me focused. There’s a bonus tip I suppose 😉

More color coding content headed your way soon - my notes app is busting with all the thoughts I’ve dumped in it so here we go. Follow to join the fun! 😉
