The Biology Awards Committee recently celebrated the Spring 2026 Biology Awards
Ceremony in the Heritage Room of Georgia Gwinnett College, April 10, 2026. Biology awards
were given in the areas of Outstanding Student, Passionate Biologist, Perseverance,
Research and Service, and the award recipients were Valeria Calderon-Silva (Outstanding
Student), Kaytlin Ramirez-Zalaya (Passionate Biologist), Catalina Ramos (Perseverance),
and Tyler Bulot (Research). Congratulations to all award recipients, congratulations to all our
graduates, and thank you Interim Dean Ametepe, and Biology Chair Lee Kurtz for your
support of our program!

This past Saturday GGC's Department of Mathematics and Statistics successfully hosted the 9th Annual Olifer Math Competition! Spots for 1st - 8th graders were sold out within a few weeks after the registration was opened. This year 166 students registered to compete, many of them returning students. A huge thank you to all the volunteers who made this event possible!

A large contingent of GGC students and faculty recently attended the Annual Meeting
of the Georgia Chapter of the American Fisheries Society (GAAFS). All students received the Robert E. Reinert Travel Award from the GAAFS Chapter, which supported their travel to the meeting. Students gave a total of nine presentations (7 poster, 2 oral), attended several professional sessions, and participated in the student-mentor
luncheon during which they engaged with professionals in the field.

Lesley Ramirez (Biology major) won first place for her poster entitled "From Bayous to Backyards: The Red Swamp Crayfish Invasion in Metro Atlanta." Congratulations, Lesley!
