At sewtrain we celebrate Zelda Valdes who designed the whole Pl***oy Bunny outfit, designed gowns for stars such as: Eartha Kitt, Ella Fitzgerald, Dorothy Dandridge, Josephine Baker and more. Ms. Valdes was the first African American to open a boutique on Broadway in New York City.

Elizabeth Keckley- an amazing business woman and seamstress, was born a slave and became the first African American designer in the White House. Read her autobiography “Behind the Scenes” or “30 Years a Slave and 4 Years in the White House”.
