Young American soldiers, some as young as 17, landed on the sandy beaches of Normandy, France on June 6, 1944. Amid the deafening explosions, enemy gunfire and utter chaos, these young men ran forward. I can only imagine the terror of those hours. “There are two kinds of people who are staying on this beach: those who are dead and those who are going to die. Now let’s get the hell out of here.”
Col. George A. Taylor, commanding the Sixteenth Infantry Regiment, First Infantry Division, on Omaha Beach. Omaha Beach was the code name for one of the three beaches on which Americans landed that day. The British and Canadians landed on two more beaches farther up the coast. More than 250,000 Allied troops landed in Normandy. It was the largest amphibious assault in the history of human warfare.
On Omaha Beach more than 2000 American casualties fell by the end of the first day which was the highest for any Allied landing zone. The pre-invasion aerial bombardment dropped the bombs behind the Germans due to the thick fog obscuring the drop zone. The naval bombardment was virtually ineffective against German guns on the cliffs over the beach.
The narrow beach filled with anti-invasion obstacles backed up to heavily defended high bluffs on the landing zone allowed the German defenders to fire from an elevated position. Rough seas carried landing craft away from their intended landing zones.
Wave after wave, battalion after battalion braved the withering German fire as units breached the coastal defenses and scaled the bluffs between strong points. Each subsequent wave, was able to utilize these initial penetrations. What looked like sure defeat turned into a tenuous hold of the beach. By the end of D-Day through grit and determination, bravery and blood, the American troops had fought their way across 300 yards of open beach, scaled the heights overlooking the channel, and occupied the plateau above the beach.
It would take eleven more months of fighting but the Allied troops were now in France.
Helping others grow their knowledge and develop their passion for history is definitely one of my favorite things to do! Seeing my students succeed IS THE GOAL!

On this day in 1943, German Panzer divisions commanded by Erwin Rommel began mauling US forces at Kasserine Pass. This served as a wakeup call to the inexperienced US troops and their leaders. Within weeks, General George S. Patton had been hired to take over II Army and by May the German Africa Korps would be destroyed.
