Ethos Medical began as a capstone project with a goal to improve epidural placement in 2018. With the help of CREATE-X and GCMI’s T3 labs, Ethos was able to validate their device through preclinical feasibility studies with practicing emergency room physicians and identify important procedure improvements. These studies will be critical as Ethos aims to complete FDA regulatory clearance in late 2022.

Last year students Faith Colaguori, Maité Marin-Mera, Megan McDonnell, and Rebecca Forry along with their sponsor, Dr. Alfredo Quiñones-Hinojosa of the Mayo Clinic, set out to create an anatomically accurate and responsive 3D model capable of simulating brain mapping. Brain mapping is a tool used by neurosurgeons to create a spatial representation of the brain and provides a mechanism to preserve brain tissue during surgery. However, brain mapping is a difficult technique and does not have a widely available surgical simulation device. To address this, the team created a proof-of-concept 3D model that is a more accurate representation of live surgical environments and can be used as a training tool for residents. The G.I. (Mostly) Joes have been hard at work redesigning and testing their device. This has involved assessing the mechanism needed to mimic the natural contractile forces produced by muscles surrounding the esophagus which patients with achalasia are often lacking. They have been working closely with partners at GCMI to create a robust test set-up, and are excited to share their work during Capstone Expo next Tuesday!
