After being forced to stay in a hotel with tubs like this last night due to a lack of availability, I treated myself to a Home2 Suites room today.

Surprisingly some of you wanted to know more about my time flying drones in the west. So the other side of this is the cost! I am not talking about money. I am talking about possible cost to your health and your family.

When you are on these jobs you are not guaranteed to have a room at an extended stay hotel with a full refrigerator, gym, and a stove.

On my assignment in California I had that. So instead of going out everyday and eating fast food I made food in my room most of the time. I did it for two reasons. 1 the Per diem was a set amount of money given to you weekly to pay back money you spent on food. So I could make an extra $300 by spending money in the grocery store. 2. I was trying to lose weight so I had a very strict diet. While in Texas I had a company card that had a limit that I had to stay under per week. No extra cash given. I still purchased groceries because you will gain weight by eating fast food three times a day for months.

When you are on these assignments if you have a family the day to day burden of house and kids fall on your significant other. All the drop offs, kid activities, house issues, pet issues, and car issues have to go one person. Some of the kids stuff like homework can be done via FaceTime depending on time zone. Important events like kids sports, birthday’s, anniversary, and funerals may be missed unless you are willing to pay for the airfare yourself and possibly be replaced. The work does not stop because you went home and you are causing the company to miss deadlines.

Lastly, socialization. You may find it difficult being away from your family mentally for extended periods of time. My kids constantly asked when I was coming home. My wife was very strong and held things together until I returned. I am blessed to have best neighbors you can ask for. They were always willing to help if I asked while I was away. You will work with many people who may have similar or different work styles than you. Be open to learn everything people are willing to show.

This is a perfect opportunity for single people. Married people can do this as well if they have a confident and strong spouse. You will definitely get to experience new things when you do a contract like this. DM me if I have missed anything and you would like me to answer a question.
