Celebrating Women in STEM! Denise Gray is the CEO of DKTN Consulting, LLC. She has also served as the president of LG Energy Solution Michigan Tech Center, In 2017, she was named Women of Color Technologist of the Year. In 2022, she was elected to the National Academy of Engineering for her leadership in developing and producing electronic controls and battery systems for electrified passenger car propulsion systems.

Do you know Lyda Newman? She was an inventor who patented a new and improved hair brush in 1898. Although, she was not the original inventor of the hairbrush, her innovative design and patent of the hairbrush helped to create the modern design!

Meet our STEM Inspiration highlight, Larsha Johnson. She is an Electrical Engineer, entrepreneur, CEO & Founder of Bits4Bots.

“When I was a little girl I always loved taking things apart, everything! It was the motherboards I found intriguing. Now, I design fun shaped printed circuit boards in hopes to inspire the next generation of STEM careers. Currently I work in the Aerospace and Defense industry.

I would like to encourage you to follow your dreams, pursue your passion, and do the hard things!”

Celebrating amazing women in STEM! Sasha Savvy Loves to Code, is a kids’ book about a 10-year-old who becomes interested in coding. The purpose of the book is to get girls interested in coding and to provide basic coding terms.

STEM Inspiration - Cierra McDonald is a Senior Programming Manager. McDonald has made a name for herself as a game developer in Microsoft’s Xbox Advanced Technology Group. Thank you Cierra for being a STEM Inspiration

Dr. Ericsson became the first African American woman to receive a doctorate in mechanical engineering from Howard University. In fact, throughout her career, she has achieved a series of “firsts,” including being the firstperson of color to receive the Washington Award from the Western Society of Engineers.

During her 25-plus years with NASA, she has worked as an engineer, technologist, project manager and executive. She has led teams developing instruments for a variety of missions, including the Near-Infrared Spectrograph on the James Webb Space Telescope and the Lunar Orbiter Laser Altimeter. She currently serves as new business lead for the Instrument Systems and Technology Division at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center.

Ciara Sivels spends her days working on some of the nation's toughest challenges as a nuclear engineer in APL's Air and Missile Defense Sector. She is also a STEM advocate. Her participation in this first-of-its-kind exhibit is part of her role in the American Association for the Advancement of Science IF/THEN Ambassadors program.

“I'm a microbiologist, public health expert, public speaker, and entrepreneur. As an entrepreneur I wear many hats which include being the "STEM Finance Queen👑", where I understand the sacrifices and debt many go into to pursue their dreams. I coach in wealth building and connect individuals from STEM and other disciplines with opportunities to eliminate debt and build lasting wealth.

Advice to women in STEM: Never give up and never limit yourself to what you're "expected" to do. Our unique experiences and skills afford us so many options to truly impact lives!”
